When you change two things and stuff goes wrong go back to the original state and replace first one thing and then the other.Chances are one of them is the culprit.Make very sure memory and the card are properly seated. On one of my motherboards inserting memory bends the motherboard slightly in the middle of the memory slot and I have to pull it up by the edge to make the computer work.
_________________
Its my life

Hello and help!

I somehow killed my friends computer. His computer runs XP. On starting his computer his computer will go through the welcome screen of window XP and then proceed to a black screen. He says that he can't even use his mouse.

We tried running his computer in "safe mode". Again windows got past the welcome screen and then went to a black screen instead of the desktop.

I really need help fixing his computer! He's convinced it's "dead". Is there a system restore on the UBCD that will help this problem? Also, I heard you had to change the BIOS settings to boot from CD, what is BIOS?
Please help!
When a drive is formatted, the partition tables are just emptied. The data is still left on that hard drive. the recovery disks just load the original data onto the hdd, overwriting the sectors needed. the rest of the data is still there. The ultimate boot cd is burnt from an iso image,so nothing is installed on the drive.
_________________
Its my life
Subject: Ubuntu 9.10, Syslinux, UBCD 5 : 3 Step How-To Guide
Posted: Fri Feb 05, 2010 1:33 pm (GMT -8)

Hi,

I have been able to add and run Ubuntu 9.10 off of my UBCD build. I am running syslinux 3.84.

1) I have downloaded the Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop ISO, extracted it, and deleted everything BUT these folders (please let me know if I can delete more!):

Code:

.disk
casper
dists
pool
preseed

2) I then transferred those folders to my UBCD usbstick.
3) Added the following entries in the syslinux menu (work good for me):

Code:

LABEL -

Thats it! Boot and try it out!

Subject: How do I execute a file?
Posted: Fri Feb 05, 2010 9:15 am (GMT -8)

Hi, I'm a noob so patience please. I need to update the firmware on a WD disk. WD have sent me the file 0405g05.exe. I need to boot to dos and run this file. I have no floppy drive and my motherboard doesn't allow me to boot from usb. So i've found UBCD which looks great. I downloaded the iso, burnt it to a CDRW and did a test boot, which worked. Now I need to execute the file, so I made a directory in the under the DOSAPPS (as per instructions elsewhere on this forum) and copied the file there and burnt the files to the disk (I'm using win7 btw). I booted using the cd, ran freedos, entered the DOSAPPS directory to find my directory I created missing.
Its a simple thing I need to do, please help
regards
Adrian
I use -f (force) and force FAT32 because i found it was the best way to get it to work with USB sticks and HDDs. Apparently it will not want to install syslinux to USBHDD unless syslinux is forced and the FAT32 is due to some obscure issue i encountered randomly.

I have been using my build of UBCD with usb sticks/hdds ranging from 32mb to 100+gb hdds. I have not had any reason/need to use FAT16 so thats why i was curious.

delicatepc wrote:

This always makes sure the UBCD installs onto a FAT32 partition (which would likely resolve this user's issue). Do you think this should be changed in UBCD?

FAT16 is better for small USB sticks (<2GB ==> 2 GB is FAT16 limit), so setting FAT32 by default is probably not that great.

Quote:

I also added a -f in the syslinux command (found that it works better):

Code:

"%~dp0\syslinux" -ma -d boot\syslinux %a2% -f

Did you get problems a lot when you don't use "force"?

Quote:

Also what are the SETLOCAL (line 17), UBCD (line 82), and ENDLOCAL (line 93) commands added to the script?

I don't know much of batch scripting (Victor does this), so the following may not be completely accurate.
I think SETLOCAL and ENDLOCAL define a region in the script. In this region all new variables that are set are only available in this section (are not globally created).

'UBCD' should be on line 81. Good find!

Code:

echo Requires: W2K/XP/W2K3/Vista/W2K8/W7 and an (optionally extracted) UBCD

I always install UBCD manually (running syslinux installer and copying the files from the ISO, without formatting). That's why I didn't write a linux script to install UBCD on an USB stick, but wrote instructions instead.
_________________
Download Ultimate Boot CD v5.0 RC1: http://ultimatebootcd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2131
Use Parted Magic for handling all partitioning task: http://partedmagic.com/

Yes, it is.

I hope Victor knows a way to fix the problem.
Maybe when you step trough the FreeDOS booting part manually (choose which USB driver to use), it may work. The default won't work for everybody, it seems.
There a new USB drivers for DOS (not in UBCD50RC1), maybe they can help:

In UBCD50RC1 MEMDISK and MEMDISK-ISO are not the same.
The normal MEMDISK in UBCD50RC1 doesn't support ISO's
The MEMDISK-ISO version is based on the normal MEMDISK (except 2 patches) + ISO booting patches.

In Syslinux 3.84 or higher, MEMDISK supports ISO's (no special version anymore). So in the next UBCD50 release, there will be only a MEMDISK and no separate MEMDISK-ISO.
_________________
Download Ultimate Boot CD v5.0 RC1: http://ultimatebootcd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2131

This is the error I get every time I try to exit the registry editor:

Icecube,

In my version of UBCD I have modified the win32 ubcd2usb.cmd to this (line 50 specifically):

Original

Code:

format "%a2%" /v:%VOLUME_ID% /x /q

New

Code:

format "%a2%" /FS:fat32 /V:%VOLUME_ID% /x /q

This always makes sure the UBCD installs onto a FAT32 partition (which would likely resolve this user's issue). Do you think this should be changed in UBCD? I dont remember if I have asked this before.

I also added a -f in the syslinux command (found that it works better):

Code:

"%~dp0\syslinux" -ma -d boot\syslinux %a2% -f

Also what are the SETLOCAL (line 17), UBCD (line 82), and ENDLOCAL (line 93) commands added to the script?

Two questions:

1. Can you use diskpart or whatever and manually format the usb stick to fat32 with default options? It sounds like ubcd script doesnt force fat32 if fat is current. This might fix your problem/warning related to cluster size (which shouldnt be there).

2. What command are you using to run the installer? The error at the end is basically saying "I checked for a file on the USB stick but I didnt find it; translation the UBCD files didnt successfully make it over". Its a simple check that looks for the file ubcd2usb.cmd on the USB drive, if it doesnt find it, it assumes that something failed along the way (which it likely did).

I am curious why its asking to overwrite the ".rnd" file... Exactly what did you specify as your ubcd source file path?

Proper command looks like so:

ubcd2usb c:\ubcdfolder e:

where c:\ubcdfolder is just where the ubcd files are and e: is the drive that you want to install these files to.
You will need to read the forums and documentation a little more. It sounds like you are not sure what you are doing and I am not sure thats something we can/want to teach/fix here.

To install to USB you need to run the ubcd2usb.cmd file located in the tools folder. It will take care of formatting the drive, transferring the needing files, and basically everything you need to get started. UBCD doesnt support booting off a NTFS usb partition yet (depends on when syslinux/grub add ntfs support).

As for loading your ISOs that is fairly easy. Its a matter of adding entries in the custom.cfg and transferring the iso to the custom folder. There is quite a few threads in the forum about this (i read at least 3 today). Search and take a look around.

Hi cripp7,

See this thread:http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1931
It doesnt completely answer your question but it gives some more info with ubcd and multiple OS/diag/tools.

The Tool booting should be possible without too much trouble. Its a matter of mapping out WIM files and so on.

The OS booting on the other hand can be a problem. Vista and later bootloader only support single install.wim file. OK say you combine both archs and both OSes into a single install.wim file - The resulting file will be bigger than fat32 single file size limit (4GB). Support for NTFS syslinux booting is on syslinux dev mind but no guarantee when/if it will happen. Only semi-solid solution i have found for this is to use USB-HDD and create multiple partitions, keep the diagnostics/ubcd/tools on the first partition and then use syslinux to chainload the other partitions (which can be NTFS or whatever; the chainloading process does care).
Not necessarily diagnostic tool but Microsoft Vista and later bootloader now support EFI (apparently). There is a folder called EFI in each cd/dvd.

I suppose you could use Windows Recovery Environment and/or the windows built in memory test. Not much but just thought i would give you a heads up.

I did some research for some of the apps I use and they all check out. As for Hiren that may be a different story - I have it filed under testing/experimental/grey area app. I have tried it using the USB booting as ISO and it works with some quirks (ie maps the drive in the wrong place etc); I found the syslinux/extracted version was a little bit more stable/less bugs.

I noticed 5.0RC1 has a MEMDISK and a MEMDISK-ISO file. Is there any difference in the two? I was under the impression memdisk now supports iso booting.

I have a set of three that I currently use that cover most/all of the dell machines I have worked on.

I personally like to use the CW##### naming scheme (dell uses this) and then adding in the texthelp the list of models that version supports. That way you know what you have and easily know which one supports what.

I have also had success to creating the hdd image file using the dell diag installer tool and running it with syslinux/UBCD (prior to the ISO booting capability being adding in syslinux.

If it really an ISO and not a hard disk image, you need 'APPEND iso' (but then your file normally would have .iso at the end of the filename and not .img)

Code:

LABEL -
MENU LABEL Your own boot image here
TEXT HELP
Your help message goes here.
ENDTEXT
LINUX /boot/syslinux/memdisk
INITRD /ubcd/custom/myimagename.img
APPEND iso

How much RAM do you have? You need at least as much as the size of the ISO (a bit more if you want to boot this ISO).
_________________
Download Ultimate Boot CD v5.0 RC1: http://ultimatebootcd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2131

Sounds like its trying to load the 2-3GB ISO image into RAM and runs out of memory (which sounds logical if you have less that 2gb of RAM). Also I may be shooting into the dark but I believe there is a limit to how large a image (ISO or otherwise) can be before you run into other constraints other than just physical memory available (say the bootloader only can read isos 4gb and less but you have 8gb of physical ram).

Depending on what the ISO (is it linux OS, Windows installer, etc., etc..) you can find a method on extracting it using Syslinux or grub to load up the individual files.

More info on what the ISO is will help.
