Check out Easeus Partition Recovery and some other tools they have. They are Windows based and should be able to help you. I believe the Recovery Partition tool is free. Recuva is another free tool to use if you haven't re-partitioned the drive; it works great to recover deleted files.

I recommend purchasing an external HD drive kit (I like Newtech.com USB 3.0 kit). I've found that the electronics in the external drive cases fail first.
