Re: Monitor won't turn off, no screensaver

How many hours is too many on a modern LCD? Some of my monitors are 10 years old though. A quick google search says "about 30,000 hours or eight years of use at ten hours per day." for the backlight to reach 50% of original brightness. It sounds like you've babied your monitors so your's ...

Re: Recovery partition

Very nice! I love getting my hands on these! My advice is either a) call Dell support and see if they are able to send you recovery discs for free/ reasonable cost, if you are hell bent on the factory OS build; or b) stick with a clean reinstall, download drivers from Dell's website, and reactivate ...

Re: Monitor won't turn off, no screensaver

I would not worry about burn-in. Modern LCDs are much more resistant to this, it's not like the old rear-projection or plasma TVs. The worst that can happen is backlight or inverters wearing out, and even that is very rare as long as the manufacturer doesn't cheap out on those parts. Simply turn the...

Re: Broadcom drivers

Unless something has changed the past year or so, I believe Broadcom is (still) one of the vendors who restrict distribution of the firmware blob. Start and go from here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/broadcom_wireless Disclaimer: my only Broadcom-equipped laptop is ages old, so not a good te...

Intel-based Apple Mac support

Since I had my hands on a fairly new Macbook Pro 13" (C2D T7550 2.2 GHz, nV GF9400, 2GB DDR3), out of pure curiosity I popped in my remastered UBCD, and lo and behold, it booted!!! I haven't been able to find any threads here pertaining to Mac support, so I thought I would start this and share ...

Re: [REQ] HWiNFO / HWiNFO32 for chapter "System"

I've added the DOS HWiNFO 5.50 to my UBCD system.cfg LABEL - MENU LABEL HWiNFO 5.50 TEXT HELP HWiNFO is a *POWERFUL* hardware detection program. It is simple, quick and on most systems very efficient. It "tries" to give only important information about all the hardware devices in your comp...

Re: UBCD Won't recongize USB hard drive

I assume you're trying to run Hitachi DFT. Most DOS utilities (DFT included) won't pick up anything connected via USB.

If you can, pull the drive out of the USB enclosure, connect it directly to the motherboard PATA or SATA port, then boot off the UBCD.

Re: Chainging the Admin password with UBCD on windows 7

Download the updated version of the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor. The newer version has full support for Win7. Integrates easily into UBCD 5.03 too, with a bit of work.

It sounds to me like a BIOS problem - suggest flashing it to the latest version if Rory's comfortable with that.

Re: Cannot format XP home

If I may condense ady's post above: you will need an F6 floppy if stock Windows XP does not contain the appropriate driver for your boot hard disk controller. Typically these will include RAID, AHCI, and many SATA add-in-boards. Now, my 2c: if you do not have a floppy drive, there are ways to integr...

There is also MaxBlast 5, also posted at Seagate. I suspect MB5 and DW11 are rebrands of the same program (Acronis TrueImage OEM) but what do I know....

ibmft.img.gz contains the wrong program!

I'm kinda scratching my head as to why noone caught this earlier, but ibmft.img.gz contains the HGST Drive Fitness Test instead of the Feature Tool!

dft.img.gz contains the Drive Fitness Test, which is correct.

Solution: redownload the Feature Tool disk image from HGST and overwrite ibmft.img.gz

I found the cabarc -p parameter (saving full path into the .cab) isn't really needed. Kept wondering why the custom .cab archives I created had all the original directories!

Code: Select all

cd \myapp
cabarc -r -m lzx:21 n c:\ubcd-extracted\ubcd\custom\myapp.cab *
