Windows XP Repair

So I'm not exactly sure how to use this whole program / cd thingy.

My problem is that I downloaded a nasty virus that corrupted my Windows.

Windows won't load.... and when I come to the boot menu

Start Normally - goes to a blank screen and doesn't load
Last Good Configuration - goes to a blank screen and doesn't load
Safe Mode(s) - don't load they get to a certain point running commands and then freeze

So i tried the avira virus scanner from the boot cd
it doesn't really do anything, just scans my computer lets me know i have viruses / warnings but doesnt fix them...
i tried updating the program but apparently cannot with the type / version of antivirus i have (i only have avira antivir on this ultimate boot cd... not sure if it's supposed to come with anything else?)

I'm not sure what i'm supposed to do with the partitions stuff but i know that formatting them will require me to reinstall windows (which i dont have the cd for in the first place which is why i'm trying this UBCD out)

So exactly what capabilities does this cd have?
am i doing something wrong?
i've searched the forums but can't seem to find the answer...

thanks for the help.

If you were actually searching, or even reading the first "Overview" page, you would know you have also F-prot and ClamAV included in UBCD by means of PartedMagic.

If you receive a message from Avira about a specific virus, use some web search engine to look for a specific solution to that specific virus.

There are many Security Rescue Disks / CD / DVD / USB options. You just need to search for the appropriate tool that actually cleans the virus that Avira already found.

I'm not trying to be rude. But the "Overview" list of programs is right there! It's the first page of this project! So stating that you searched that kind of info is..., well..., "rude".

I have not enough knowledge about booting options for PartedMagic. Maybe you could select one of the options from the PartedMagic boot menu that requires less ram?

In addition to trying that possibility, or waiting for some other user with more knowledge about PartedMagic, you could try posting back here the info about the specific virus (the one reported by Avira). Or searching for a Security Rescue Disk that actually cleans infections (specially, the one your system have).

Have you checked the checksum of the downloaded UBCD iso image?

Are you booting from CD or USB?
Is the file /pmagic/initramfs available on that medium?

Did you check the md5sum of your ISO, to see if the download was corrupt?

I normally do not do this but I'm going to be a bit "rude". I have not been with these forums long enough to really have any say so but I find it offensive that you call someone trying to help you rude.

Any computer owner has some responsibility as to keeping backups. Is your data backed up? Also most systems today do not come with recovery disks. Usually when you are setting up your system you will be offered the opportunity to create restore disks. Did you do this?

I'm sorry and have no intent to insult you but you are asking for help; act accordingly, do not insult the people trying to help you.
