It maybe free...but you have to fill out a form to download. Would have to contact the owner for approval as it doesn't mention freeware anywhere... :? :?

I am not saying the program is worth of being included in ubcd, and I am not saying the contrary either.

I have no idea of legal issues about adding memscope 1.10 to UBCD. Maybe its license states that you should contact the author for permission to add it to UBCD? I don't know. Is it legal to download it from other sites other than the author's one? I don't know.

What I do know is:

-There are 2 downloads available. One is an iso image, the other is a floppy creator (Winimage SFX 8.00 format).

- MajorGeeks, Brothersoft and Softpedia categorize memscope as freeware.

-The iso version at MajorGeeks is "slightly" different from the one at Softpedia, but both are listed as version 1.10 and freeware.

Several facts:

-At its page in Micro2000 website, the "download" is free, but that doesn't mean the software itself is free, or if you could add/distribute it to/with any other software.

-The title of the link says it is free:

Code: Select all

http://www.micro2000uk.co.uk/products/microscope/MemScope_Free_Memory_Tester.htm
-It isn't being displayed in the "products" page of micro2000.

-The Micro2000 blog:

Code: Select all

http://micro2000.blogspot.com/search/label/memscope
is titled: "Free Computer Memory Tester", and the same type of reference is named along the article.

It's worth always getting permissions on things you are unsure about; Esp. if it keeps you out of a lawsuit.

PS. How many memory testers do we need?

UBCD is full of tools that are "almost" the same. How many boot managers do we need? How many partitioners do we need?...

As oppose to other tools, RAM diagnostics depends on several aspects; one of them being hardware support (each tool may have different requirements / compatibility issues), and the algorithm being used.

For example, memory diagnostics running under Windows, in general won't be so exhaustive, since part of the RAM is being exclusively used by the OS.

OTOH, DOS memory diagnostic tools should be more reliable, but they still depend on an algorithm to alternatively "free" the RAM so it can be tested (an to use alternative patterns to test it). That's why some tools won't find problems in some cases, but other memory diagnostic tools are successful. In other cases, the first tool will success, and the second would fail.
