UBCD 5.0.3 freezes up at this point...
"idle: going resident fdapm adv:max"
... when starting a number of different utilities.

Has been reported in a couple of web pages...

Hope it gets fixed in the next release, as the workaround is a bit kludgy.

Can you specify all the utilities that produce this error? It would help out.

I personally experienced it when trying to run AIDA16 (?). There was a second utility in the same sub-menu that gave me similar results, but I can't recall which one.

Sorry. Too far behind in my work to try every utility in every menu and note which ones freeze, especially considering the info below.

The forum discussion in the link above mentioned another user who cited one or two particular utils that froze up.

Also, Googling that phrase "idle: going resident fdapm adv:max" and the phrase "ultimate boot CD" will lead you to others.

Strong lead, hope this helps... That same link also included a reply that indicates the problem lies in the startup for FreeDOS. It requires the user to NOT accept the default FreeDOS startup, but the second one, and to NOT install FDAPM when that window pops up. I haven't actually tried it yet myself. Just fell back to UBCD 4.1.1 -- too busy.

Hi,

I see no fix to this bug yet, in an otherwise GREAT and FANTASTIC diagnostic system. So, I spent some more time and got the following further diagnostic info. Any idea how we can forward this to the wizards who create/update UBCD for a fix?

Tested UBCD 5.0.3 on my two different systems:
Laptop = Acer Aspire 5315. Intel Celeron 550 @ 2GHz. 1GB DDR2.
Desktop = Gigabyte G1975X F4. Intel Pentium D 930 @ 3GHz. 4GB DDR2.

Results (when accepting all the defaults offered):
CPU -- CPU Info ... Laptop OK, Desktop OK
CPU -- Intel PID 4.22 ... Laptop OK, Desktop Crashed
System -- AIDA16 ... Laptop OK, Desktop Crashed
System -- PC-Config ... Laptop OK, Desktop Crashed

Those 3 always crashed at the same start-up point...
Unpack: Extracting "A:\level2\idle.cab"
Idle: going resident fdapm adv:max

So, did the 3 crash programs again. But, always chose option #6 of the Memory Management start-up screen: "Boot no UMB (defensive)"
CPU -- Intel PID 4.22 ... Desktop OK
System -- AIDA16 ... Desktop OK
System -- PC-Config ... Desktop Crashed - "Runtime error 200 at 0264:0162"

Hope this gives the UBCD wizards enough info to create a fix for 5.0.4

I'm not saying that there is no way to resolve this issue (it may depend not only on UBCD boot modes, but also on BIOS configuration), but maybe there is, in the meantime, an effective workaround.

The tools that you mentioned are targeted at System Information, but they are a little bit old for the specific systems you mentioned. So even if someone could find a way to solve the boot problem, it wouldn't give you a complete System Information report.

So, maybe an effective workaround for you could be to try Hardware Detection Tool (HDT), also included in UBCD (and again under the PartedMagic boot menu), which could be used for almost (if not exactly) the same purpose that those mentioned tools.
