new user - just need to be pointed in the right direction

So I finally managed to get something to boot on my broken PC (UBCD). My windows disc does nothing.
Now I need to know where to start. First guess would be HDD? but I have a Scandisk SSD and not sure which tool to use for that?
And then generally speaking, how should I proceed to test other things? any suggestions on diagnosing? basic symptoms are that my PC just stopped booting and also won't boot from Windows disc.
