I used Samsung disk manager v10 to format a new hard drive in a laptop. Before I was getting an error that mainly stated that I could not use the drive because my drive size was reported incorrectly. Now it seems to be fine. Problem is how do I install Windows ME from the CD if I need the Ultimate CD to use dos as I would a floppy (no floppy drive). How can I copy Win9x to the c: drive?

Ok windows installed up until it rebooted to finish. Then with the WinME CD still in a message came up "Insert boot disk and press any key". So I went back and made the c: drive the 1st boot and I'm still getting the "Insert boot disk and press any key"

Oh boy what headaches.

So I put Ultimate Boot CD back in and now I'm back to square one.

Easy way:

Boot off the Windows ME CD and type in:

sys C:

It will say "System Transfered" and then reboot off the HDD.

Hard way (I'm hesitant to suggest this as your HDD size issue may come into play, but for others it's fine):

1. If the drive is blank (or in this case, you have no data on it you need), boot off the Windows ME CD and run Fdisk to create the partition (or, use Free Fdisk off the UBCD).

2. Reboot per Fdisk/Free Fdisk's instruction, and boot off the Windows ME CD.

3. When the ME CD boots, type in format C: /s /q and this will format the drive as FAT32 and add the command.com prompt to it.

4. Use this command at C:\ to make a Windows install folder (so you'll never need the CD again for drivers, etc):

mkdir WMEsetup

5. Go to E:\WinME and

copy *.* C:\WMEsetup

This will copy all of the installation files needed.

6. Reboot, now you'll be loading off your HDD, go to WMEsetup and type in setup, and that should be be it.

The commands you posted weren't recognized, and Windows ME disk won't boot. If I'm not mistaken Windows XP does boot but Win 98 and ME do not. Unable to create any directories, I could only copy to c: I Installed windows ME again after copying all the files to the hard drive, however upon reboot the same error message comes up. "Insert Boot-Disk and press any key". Although scandisk say's ok prior to installing Windows ME, for some reason C: isn't recognized as a boot disk upon reboot even though it shows active in the bios menu.

Thanks Steve for trying to help. I'll keep on trying.

Ok I see that the Samsung hard drive tool is supposed to fool the old bios into thinking the drive is smaller and within the bios limitations, however it isn't working. Also can't yet understand why some of the dos commands are not available.

So I thought if I could set the c: partition to small size the bios and windows would both agree. Problem: Once I set the partitions and made C: active, I am unable to find any tool on the UBCD that will format any of the partitions.

Still trying
