Fix Hard Drive?

#1 Post by wpr » Sun Jan 20, 2008 4:06 am

I have a drive that isn't working properly. The BIOS recognizes it and XP Pro's Device Manager shows it to be 'working properly,' but I can't access the partitions on it.

Can I use any of the utilities on the UBCD to get this drive working properly again? If so, could you please give the steps?

Thanks for any help.

testdisk may help you out, but read the instructions first in case there are any changes.. The wiki for it is here ---> http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

MBRtool and others may help too. Sometimes the drive could be corrupted so you can't get it back to working without a reload but you may be able to get some of the data back that you haven't backed up..

Thanks for the reply. I tried Testdisk but it wouldn't/couldn't read the drive.

MBRtool looks interesting, but I didn't see where it could fix the master boot record. The closest option is the restore feature, but I don't have a copy of the MBR before the disk failed. Unless, I missed something.
