Beginner requests paint-by-numbers style help on booting XP

#1 Post by johnah » Fri May 23, 2008 5:26 am

Hello and sorry to be crap:

1. My windows xp showed a bluescreen crash notice twice in succession and has since failed to boot.

The 'windows did not start successfully screen' counts down from 30 on 'start windows normally' and remains stuck on '0'. Any attempts to shift option (eg to Safe Mode) results in count down disappearing and nothing more happens.

2. Bought ultimatecd latest version on ebay. Got to main menu on cd and loaded 'Boot first hard disc' was returned to counting down 30-0 screen, which again stuck on '0'. Let hard disc boot work automatically by waiting 5 minutes and same result. Loaded 'Boot second hard disc' and received 'disc is not bootable'.

Any simple ideas please?

With thanks, John

You can try using recovery console and running chkdsk /r - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
