“Missing or invalid T:\DOS APPS\MCAFEE\MESSAGES.DAT”

Iam trying to rid my pc of malware/virus using the UBCD. I have successfully created the CD, boots fine, however when I pick the mcafee option, the scan fails wit the message above. When I run a dir on the directort I can see the MESSAGES.DAT file.

I have not tried the other packages yet, but picked Mcafee because I have updated the dat files.

Any help appreciated

Try copying the dat and program file(s) to ramdrive (it may be attempting a write access). Unlikely, but worth a shot.

Mcafee is good, I agree.

Also, the directory should be set to “T:\DOSAPPS\MCAFEE\MESSAGES.DAT” (no space).

Try changing it. (-:

thank for the help. I have put the image onto a usb disk and it appears to get further. I boot, start mcafee, it scans memory ok, but then hangs.

I thinh that the windows xp C: drive is not available , but am not sure, nor do I know how to check as the scan is in a suspended state .

You have to install the nfts driver (you can choose it when the freedos image is booting).

For UBCD 4.1.1 you can. For version 5b, you have to type "ntfs" at the command prompt (or select by typing "menu" and choosing NTFS).

Hi guys, thanks for the help so far. Iam reasonably PC literate but am stumped as to ho to get the Win(xp) drive mounted for mcafee to scan. This is what Iam doing so far (V4.1.1 of UBCD).

1) Boot from USB. Ok.
2) Pick Other Tools & Antivirus Tools then Mcafee
3)Image boot starts (choose option 1 UMBPCI (Optimal)
4) Running APSIUSB Panel appears - leave to default (not installed)
5) Running CD-Rom Panel - Leave to default
6) ASPI SCSI Support pannel - Leave to default
7) Keyb panel - Leave default (us)
8)Install DOSLFN - Default - not installed
9) Install Ntfs, Config - x-Install NTFS(Read only), (X- Drive letter), (4096 XMS), (x-unicode filenames),(x Disable compression, extendd int 13 support), (X verbose)
Message mounting NTFS partition (0x81:1) as drive X
10) FdAPM - default
11) Starting UBCD App Mcafee Panel. enter OK
Following messages on screen
Bootdrv A:
RAMDRV Q:
UBCDDRV C:
Mcafee VirusSCAN for DOS/PM v4.40.0
Copyright etc......

12) after approx 90 sec get the following
Checking memory for viruses ... is OK.

Then everything stops / hangs.
I cannot enter commands, check directorys etc.. so Iam not sure what is (is not ) mounted running.

Does anyone have a step by step guide that will take me through the process ?
What am I missing ?
Iam still supicious that the win(xp) drive is not mounted but do not know how to check.

Thanks in advance. & sorry for being so long winded in the explanation.

Regards

Have you tried it using EMM386 and/or in ultra defensive mode?

Update.

I now can confirm that the win(xp) drive is mounted as x:\ and can see it using VC. I have negociated throught the directory structure ect....

However when I run the Mcafee scan, it hangs after mem test, there is no indication of any disk i/o, (no sound or flashing disk light). Any ideas ?

I don't have much experience with what it is you're trying to do. I'm guessing the issue isn't to do with NTFSDOS being read-only??? It MIGHT be worth trying NTFS4DOS (it supports read and write but not LFN). You may have to remaster the iso to use it (it currently resides as an image in UBCD4).
