Minimum RAM required to boot?

#1 Post by jayseye » Sat Jun 11, 2005 1:13 pm

Does anyone know how much memory is required to boot UBCD 3.3?

I'd like to check whether 32 MB might be inadequate, before digging into the boot error messages.

If so, can the configuration be modified to allow booting on PCs with low memory -- setting a smaller ramdisk size, or loading from the CD instead of from ramdisk?

Minimum RAM required to boot?

Pretty much all the apps will run on systems with less than 1MB
since they are DOS based. Exceptions to this are the linux utils,
Insert, RIP, etc.

Re: Minimum RAM required to **boot**?

My question is, (regardless of individual apps,) how much RAM is required to -boot- the CD itself, and to get to the main menu.

The UBCD

It is not about RAM!!

I made a UBCD from a download through http://www.ubcd4win.com/
As soon as I start my computer, it asks for a boot disk, IT WILL NO GO ON TO WINDOWS (xp-pro).
After it boots from the UBCD it displays:
[DR-DOS]A:\> AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT.
I Went on the Bart-PE website and it said to type d:\bcd\cds\wxppro\files\
and all that did was change [DR-DOS]A:\> to [DR-DOS]D:\>
can someone help as to what to do next?

Minimum RAM required to boot?

It should boot with less than 32K of memory... if you can even
find a system with so little RAM.

The above message refers to the Windows version of the Ultimate
Boot CD. As you can imagine, it requires significantly more
ram. I would say at a minimum, 128MB, but it's best to check
the forum that relates to that project.

Yes, thanks, bldrdash. I use an old motherboard as a testbed for embedded systems development.

Since the boot failure may be "not about RAM" (jeez...), I've posted another topic with full details on the hardware and the error message:
