Local drive (C) is invalid!!??

Hi all, Mr n00b here once again seeking advice from the grand masters...
Has anyone else had problem getting the local hard drive to be recognized?. When I use the antivirus tools from UBCD (mostly McAfee and F-Prot) often enough I cannot get them to scan the local HDD.
When I issue the drd command, it returns the drive C as 'invalid'. So the AV tools only scan the ramdrive and the cd rom. Well that's not going to do me any good now, is it?? I am always careful to enable ntfs support on the xp machines, but it does not seem to matter. Could it be a sign of a corrupted boot sector? I usually run drive diagnostics like dft on the same drive without incidents. If dft sees the drive, why is memdisk calling it invalid?
Anyone wants to step up to the plate and take a crack at this one?
