XP clean install on SATA drive

#1 Post by ballininthamix » Tue Oct 28, 2008 1:41 pm

Hi there! I just downloaded UBCD but before I got started I wanted to see if anyone had any advice for me.

I am trying to install Windows XP on my new SATA HDD, but in order for my Mobo to recognize the drive, SATA controllers need to be installed. I realize that I can press F6 when booting from the windows CD to install drivers from a floppy.

The problem is, I don't have a floppy drive. Will this trick work if I try installing the drivers from a USB thumb drive instead? Does UBCD have anything that could help me with this?

Or....

I still have the OS installed on my old IDE HDD. Is there a way to format/install Windows on the new drive, boot from the old HDD and install the SATA drivers from there? I think I'm making this too complicated, but I would like to have as my end result, one new SATA drive with Windows and nothing else on it, and use the old IDE for storage.

Any help is much appreciated...

I think that you can best build your own bootable windows CD with UBCD4win.

Another option is to slipstream the drivers into your own customized Windows installation CD:
