I also face a similar problem. I added the latest mcafee definitions, which I extracted from the latest SDAT, to the UBCD ISO. When I boot with UBCD, and try to run the mcafee command line scanner, it says 'unable to load scan86.exe'. Nowadays, the McAfee definition file is almost 50MB, and the program may not be able to load the definition in memory.

A workaround I tried was to start the system in Safe Mode with command prompt, then run the scanner, which loads correctly, as Windows is managing the memory in this case. It works, but then the whole concept of having a boot disk is eliminated, as we need a boot disk because we dont want to load windows.

I think the UBCD must be tweaked to be able to use all of the physical memory installed on the system, which will enable it to load the definitions.

Try UBCD50b12:
- It has F-prot and ClamAV as virus scanner (run Parted Magic first to run them).
- Or run Avira antivirus

Thanks, but F-Prot DOS has stopped creating updates, the sign.def, and other files are not updated anymore.

I havent tried ClamAV yet, so cannot comment on it.

Best is really subjective in that many people like varying programs. I for one have used many of the free versions and mostly use AVG and Avast. I have read however that Avira has the best detection rate out along with the most false positives. There are some review sites out there that have tested many versions out, but are usually a version or so behind.

My top suggestions are:

1. AVG
2. Avast
3. Avira
4. Whatever you want....

I don't suggest Norton or Mcafee as I used to many years ago as they are paid versions and so many free versions are just as good. Take this advice with others that post and make your decision as to what you prefer.
