Using UBCD V5 verses UBCD4Win V3.5

#1 Post by basscarp » Mon Dec 07, 2009 6:24 am

Is the UBCD V5 supposed to be used to BOOT off of and repair a computer just like another program called UBCD4win http://www.ubcd4win.com/
What is the diffrence in lay-mans terms??

I guess my question in a nut shell is what are the uses for each??
Do you boot off of UBCD V5 or just open the CD and use it's tools?

Thanks, Mike You are welcome to call me and explain also 803-426-8562

UBCD v5 and UBCD4WIN are meant to be booted.

UBCD has several tools like memory testers, CPU testers, Hard disk tools, ... which have their own OS (DOS or Linux). In most cases UBCD is more oriented to diagnose hardware problems. Parted Magic can be used to partition hard disks and backing up files, ...

UBCD4Win boots into a small Windows environment from which you can run different programs. UBCD4Win is more oriented to fixing Windows installations (cleaning the registry, removing viri, ...).

Also...

UBCD - Download is an ISO file which is a CD image, you burn the image to the CD. Not as a file but as an image.

UBCD4Win - Download is an installation file for the project. You will need a XP source (Install CD) that you will use to create the ISO/CD/DVD. The current version is very large and may not fit on a CD if you update the Anti-Virus and Malware plugins without disabling some plugins that you will not need. You can also use a DVD instead of CD so you can keep all the plugins enabled.

I usually disable quite a few plugins from UBCD4Win that I don't need or have on other CDs such as DBaN which is included in UBCD also.

I managed to use ubcd2usb.bat for UBCD v4.1.1 last Sunday.

The main difference in my set up was that I extracted the ISO to my hard drive using 7zip.

I found out that ubcd2usb doesn't like spaces in the filename path, eg C:\Documents and Settings\Some User\etc won't work. So I made sure the top level directory of the extracted files was at the root of my C drive.

It was necessary for me to look inside ubcd2usb.bat to make sure I was handing it the proper path name. Looking at the bat file might help your problem too?

Maybe try extracting the files to your hard drive - you can always delete them afterwards - and run ubcd2usb.bat from your hard drive.
