Unmountable Boot Volume

#1 Post by Duderino316 » Sat Mar 20, 2010 10:08 am

My PC froze while the Windows XP install disc was formatting the HDD install, I had no other option but to turn off the PC and restart and now I am greeted with the blue screen of death "Unmountable Boot Volume" error.

Can I use UBCD to fix this problem, if so which utilities should I try?

Thanks in advance.

Did you try to run the Windows XP isntall disc again, so you can format the partition again?

You can also try:

Download Ultimate Boot CD v5.0: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html
Use Parted Magic for handling all partitioning task: http://partedmagic.com/

Yes I did: the CD copies the installation files to HDD normally during installation but when it restarts to continue install from the files copied to HDD the blue screen pops up. But now the installation just hangs and it doesn't even go into the installation menu :(

I was able to run an ISO image of Kubuntu from USB, installed gparted and ran it and I got this message:
Device Information
Model: ATA Maxtor 4D040K2
Size: 38.16 GiB
Path: /dev/sda

DiskLabelType: msdos
Heads: 255
Sectors/Track: 63
Cylinders: 4982
Total Sectors: 80035830

Failed to mount '/dev/sda1' : input/output error. NTFS is inconsistent.
Run chkdsk /f on windows then reboot it TWICE!
The usage of the /f parameter is very IMPORTANT!
No modification was made to NTFS by this software.

ntfsresize v2.2.2 (libntfs 10:0.0)
ERROR(S): Opening '/dev/sda1' as NTFS failed: Input/Output error.
NTFS is inconsistent. Run chkdsk /f on windows then reboot it TWICE!
Since I can't use the CD to do anything anymore, I searched and there is no chkdsk equivalent in Linux, so I have to use chkdsk, according to this list here: http://www.ubcd4win.com/contents.htm chkdsk is included in UBCD but I couldn't find it, you mind telling me where/how i can run it please?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555302

Try it, should fix your problem.

Knoppix has intregrated support for ntfs (most linux live cd's do)...and a program called ntfsfix that does the same check for then disk as chkdsk.

Here is a success story:http://www.lostechies.com/blogs/jason_m ... -ntfs.aspx

I never leave my home without knoppix on me. :)
