Can't see HDs through DOS

Well, as the subject suggests, I cannot see my HDs when booting my computer through the DOS boot disks. This happened with a couple of the programs loaded off the UBCD. I have run through the alphabet trying all possible variants, but to no avail.
I have 2 hard drives, both of them formatted in NTFS format and both are serial ATA. Does this make any difference? This may sound like a stupid problem, but any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.
