How about boot FreeDOS (F6, F1), then type "chkdsk" at the command prompt?

Hmm at least in the 1.0 release, the chkdsk of FreeDOS seems to be very unstable.
I'd advise to use dosfsck instead.

Do you have any OS installed on your hdd ?
If so, which one ?
Isn't there any scandisk program there which you could copy to a floppy ?
