scrambled screen

Hi

I tried ubcd on an old system with different pci vga cards (even an isa card).
The menu appears fine, but when I choose F7 (INSERT) or the Hitachi Feature Tool, the screen goes garbage (ascii signs in all kinds of color)

Using he Hitachi Feature Tool from floppy and booting INSERT from CD works fine.
So ubcd does some screen stuff just before starting an application?
Does ne1 knows why this happens and/or knows a way to make this work?
