Problems with external Hard Drive

Greetings!

I got some problems fixing my external hard drive with UBCD. I used different (older) and the current version of UBCD.
My BIOS accepts the external HDD (Samsung 300 GB) but if I try to boot up a HDD Tool like Maxtor Maxblast 4 or the Samsung tools or something like that UBCD always crashes and hangs when it's starting something with Cal... Dr. DOS. If i plug off the external hard drive everything works fine.
What could be the problem? Do i have to fix something in my BIOS Options?

Are there any last messages on the screen before the hang occurs?
