I'm using a WD WD740GD (Raptor) hard drive and the WD DLG Diagnostic utility and WD Data Lifeguard utility has no formatting feature.

On UBCD: which of these utilities lets you format a RAW (unformatted) hard disk into NTFS?

I don't know of any utility that will format the harddisk into NTFS per
se, since this will also involve partitioning. This is best done using
the OS setup CD eg. the WinXP Setup CD.

The diagnosis apps from the HDD manufacturers will typically only
perform a low-level format of the harddisk for you.

Are you absolutely sure Acronis TrueImage wants a formatted/partitioned
HDD to restore an image?!!

I have not used Acronis TrueImage personally, but knowing what it does
(something like Ghost), it seems kinda ironic to want a NTFS-formatted
harddisk (when diaster strikes) to restore an image to, since they are
gonna have to to wipe out the harddisk anyway and reconfigure the
partition table to fit the info stored in the image!

and it sounds like you've resolved your problem. A points:

If you run UBCD Full, with Insert, you can run Qtparted which
is a Partition Magic clone; from there you can create/resize/
delete partitions, even NTFS.

The information Acronis support gave you regarding your raw
disk was incorrect. I myself have restored an image to a
disk that had previously been wiped with DBAN; no problems.
