Hi Victor,

Can you pass on any information on the next version of the Ultimate Boot CD?

Will there be a v 3.5 and if so do you have a list of updates or new features you can share?

Kind Regards

Simon

I am very close to finishing UBCD V3.5. Currently waiting for a fix on FreeDOS boot disk, as well as an enhancement on mprime boot disk.

UBCD V3.5 is still based on CDShell 2.1.6 though, so those boot problems with UBCD V3.4 on specific machines won't go away, unfortunately.

INSERT will also remain the same, since the original maintainer, Charles Appel, is no longer available to work on it.

Other than that, it's the usual update of apps to their latest versions, plus the addition of some new apps. For DOS apps, we will be switching to a boot disk based on LZ-DOS for the default, though the user will be able to change to FreeDOS or OpenDOS via the expert mode.

That's all for now.

Good News and a NTFS4DOS update ...

Hi Victor,

That is good to hear; new versions are always nice to see ;)

I noted this new program release earlier today which might be useful for UBCD in the future.

It seems that there is now a free version of NTFS4DOS which allows reads and writes. This can be downloded from Avira, the folks who produce the AntiVir Free Antivirus package here:

http://www.free-av.com/antivirclassic/a ... s4dos.html

I believe it works with FreeDOS however I have not tried it as yet.

Is it possible to extract the "standard" FreeDOS boot image from UBCD to a floppy for experimentation?

Kind Regards

Simon

OK, since datapol-technologies has merged with Avira, I guess it makes sense to use the latest version from Avira. Let me download and try it later. Thanks!

Hello people.

Is 3.5 coming at all?

The critical missing piece is an updated version of FDUBCD.IMG from Erwin. But he is busy with work, so I guess we will just need to be patient.

To quote another board that deals with free open source projects....

It will be done when it is done and not a second earlier.

Be patient. The people who modify and bring this together are not being paid to do it. They volunteer there free time to do these things. Demanding updates will get you nothing but a closed project. Give Victor and his sources time to do what they need to do and it will get done. Begging for them to speed up will just make them slow down.

There won't be a V3.5. I am jumping directly to V4.0. Reason is because CDShell is not longer being updated, so I decided to switch back to syslinux/isolinux, which is actively being updated, and so has a better chance on working with your funky new machines. Not to mention syslinux/isolinux now has a pretty usable Simple Menu System. which makes the switch possible.

Another advantage of using syslinux/isolinux is that it should be much easier to make UBCD work on a USB thumb drive. I am planning to include an updated version of ubcd2usb with the main distribution.

Where am I now? About 40% done. So it should be another one to two months to go, depending on how much free time I have. Won't be long!

PS: Erwin is done with the new version of the DOS boot disks, so the ball is in my court now. :D

Hello!

Thanks for your work, time and engagement ... i think, its a good way to stay on a active developed base.

But what about a minor-update to 3.5, while 4.0 is in developement? I really liked some features, like the virus-scan. But virus-scans with signatures, which are older than one year, are useless :(

What about a small update on the old base, only with little updates of the containing tools?

There are tutorials around about how to update / add stuff to the UBCD ;)
Anyway I guess a 3.5 (or 3.41) which would fix the known issues of 3.4 could be a good thing, yet it would take some time and delay a little more the release of 4.0...

UBCD V4.0 beta 1 is now available at:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download/ubcd40b1.7z

Those of you who are interested, please help me test it and email/PM me your results.

The file size is about 90MB.

Basically, in V4.0, I have switched over to syslinux V3.36 (because cdshell has not been worked on for a long while). This version also incorporates a modified version of UBCD2USB and can be directly written to a USB memory stick! Check out tools볒usb. Everything on the UBCD seems to work when ported over to a USB memory stick, so it is quite nice.

Thanks Victor :)

I will try it!

Beta 1 - this means, it is feature-complete, and only needs to be bugfixed?

Yes, it is feature complete. I may update certain apps and the virus sigs in the final release, but no new apps will be added.

In particular, I would like someone to test tools볒usb볒usb.bat, since I don't own a machine that can boot USB sticks. But I did test it on VMWare by mounting the stick as a raw disk, so I think it should work on a real machine.

I have no USB peripheral except a scanner and a printer :(

This is much improved from previous releases, I'm looking forward to integrating this into my multi-boot disc.
Appreciate your interest! Please help to test this beta release so that any bugs can be ironed out before the final release.
Would it be possible to include the CD version of Super Grub Disk and the current version of G4U in the final release?
I have tried, but didn't succeed. If you have any info on how to do it, please let me know.

For the CD version of SGD, I don't think GRUB can co-exist with isolinux on the same CD.

For the current version of g4u, the CD version is the logical choice. Unfortunately, it doesn't like the "-N" parameter of mkisofs, which is required if you wish to add Windows stuff (eg. Recovery Console, UBCD for Window) to the CD later on (which I think is a very popular pursuit).

I tested tools볒usb볒usb.bat and it made my usb stick into a bootable ubcd.

I have run into some problems with some of the applications and can be more specific if you'd like.

Thanks for the great tool! :D
