When starting up my computer, it hangs at the windows xp symbol. When I try to start it up in Safe Mode, it stops at TDI.SYS. After doing some internet research, I found this site (http://forum.kaspersky.com/lofiversion/ ... 85369.html) which has a guy claiming that he used the chkdsk /r command through UBDC in order to fix the problem. So, I made a UBCD, but can't find a way to run the command. Is there a way to do this? Is there another way to fix this problem?

If you have an XP cd, just boot using that and choose recovery console. From there you'll have to enter your Administrator password (if you dont remember setting one just try a blank password) and you'll be able to run chkdsk.exe. If you get prompted for some file (I cannot recall the name) type d:\i386\[name of file] where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.

Well I tried to use Easy CD Creator to create a boot disk but it didn't work.
I downloaded UBCD 4 Windows and Extracted to a folder and used ECC to create bootable disk. It didn't work so I read a little more and it looks like I have to extract the .exe right to the C drive? then create the CD. Am I supposed to copy anything else with the .iso? I also have a problem with his being SP1 and mine being SP2?

At least if I can get a boot disk to get to a prompt, I could save his spreadsheets, then do a clean install.

If all you need to do is save files, look into Knoppix. Download that ISO and burn it to a CD. You can boot the computer with Knoppix and use it to save the files, especially if you attach a USB drive or something similar before Knoppix starts.

However Knoppix is a Linux LIVE on CD OS, with a graphical shell similar to Windows, it is NOT the same as Windows. As such there are a few things you would have to learn.
