Can UBCD 3.3 help me - vista update configuration stalling?

Hello All

I am an unsophisticated user and have suffered at the hands of a Vista update.

My Acer laptop is now stuck in a loop of trying to configure the update at "stage 3 of 3" and just restarts to end up at the same screen again. It's a problem known by MS - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

I can get into the set up and have tried starting in safe mode and tried the repair tool installed on the hard drive, neither have worked.

Microsoft are providing support by email but insist I need to have a DVD of Vista, which I don't have (came pre-installed). I don't have any recovery disk either. Acer support told me to restore the laptop to factory settings and lose all my data etc, they will not send me a CD.

I have paid someone a small fee to get all my data onto an external hard drive as I was scared of losing everything.

I have bought UBCD v3.3 from an ebay source. I can get to the menu screen of UBCD but I am not sure which tool to try. Also, some times I've tried one of the options it just takes me to a dos screen "Error: file not found" and then I cannot get back to the main menu.

So, if you can advise at all I would be VERY grateful:

1. can I try UBCD to sort this Vista update problem?
2. if so, what tool should I use from UBCD menu?
3. if I am just getting a dos prompt from my selection on UBCD does it mean the CD I've got isn't working?

Many thanks for any advice!

UBCD can't repair your Vista installation.

Try Windows Vista Recovery Disc:

Thanks Icecube

I've seen someone in their blog has had the same problem and resolved it with the download.

I'll give it a try!

Many thanks :D

I had this same exact issue plague my first vista 64bit install. It was related to one of the performance and compatibility updates...so after reinstalling since I didnt care if I lost anything and it was a fresh install anyways, I installed everything BUT the performance and compatability updates first, then went back and installed each one at a time and worked flawlessly.

Thanks

I ended up paying someone to sort it out for me. It seems I had XP and Vista on my laptop (somehow???) and was running a mix of both.

Could be my boyfriend's father who I inherited the laptop from.

Anyway for £94 (plus another £60 for first back-up) it was sorted and updates fine now.

Just needed to get it sorted before I tore all my hair out :D
