Data Recovery

Hi Guys,
Hope you can help. I got fed up with Windows running so slowly and the horrific 'Roxio Desktop Manager' software that I could not get rid of. Decided that the best option was to reinstall XP Pro.
Have a Seagate Barracuda 130Gb hard drive that was partitioned; with XP and program files in one partition and all personal data in the other (5years of photos, music etc).
Used Windows Boot disk to perform the reinstall and was prepared to lose everything on the XP partition. During the process, it gave me the option to select which partition to choose and so I went ahead (it didn't offer me the chance to repair, only to do a full reinstall). Should have guessed that Microsoft couldn't keep it that simple! It then said that it had dicovered another partition and wanted to format that too. It gave me the option to abort so I did. Having poked its pesky MS nose into both partitions, the disk then became next to useless. System 'hangs' at intitial start up, if I try to use that drive as master. With it set as slave, using an older drive as master with XP loaded on it, the drive shows up as one entity (not partitioned) but will not allow access. Says that I need to format the disk so it can be used.
So to the point....!
Can I use a utility on UBCD to recover the files from the damaged hard drive? All I need are the photos, music and word docs. I suppose I am looking for a 'forensic' tool to just let me select and transfer data to another drive.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Cheers
