My friend has an Acer laptop and he got a crazy virus; crashed everything. So i am trying to do a system restore, but Acer has it password protected. I tried 000000 it does not work. So i loaded up UB and went into offline NT passwod.

Step 1 is select my Hard drive i got that NP, but i cant get by step 2.

Step 2 askes me to select patch and registry file. As defult it shows me winnt/system32/config. So i hit enter and it just askes me the same qustion again. I tried windows/system32/config and the same thing happens.

Any help would be much appreciated and would save me from doing a full format.

Thanks.

You don't mention what versions you are using, of UBCD, of Offline NT password and of Windows.

If I understand correctly, the problem you have is with the Administrator password of Windows, correct?

I ask because there are other types of passwords (BIOS or HDD for example).

In general, you should customize UBCD latest stable version (currently, 5.0.3) with the latest Offline NT password version.

To customize UBCD: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/customize.html

To get the latest Offline NT password version: http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

(this is specially recommended if you have Windows Seven).

AFTER updating, a general recommendation is to wait a little more time when you select your steps, like indicated in this topic:

Other possible topics with similar issues or suggestions are:

You also may try Ophcrack
http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/
(which you can also add to UBCD by customization (search the forum for instructions)

There are more options, but try first with the more simple ones.

This is a known "step-back" when dealing with this problem, so searching in several forums could give you the very best answer even without posting the question.

Please came back with your results, so it could be useful for others too.

You need to list the laptop model.

Would also try calling Acer and asking for the password...tho a system restore may not fix the issue and just cause even more problems by installing more malware located in previous system restore points.

I would run a scan first with AVIRA AntiVir Rescue System (download the latest) and THEN attempt to system restore. You are basically trying to restore infected files with more infected files. Very bad idea and will not get you anywhere.
