I just used the boot cd and now am running the anti virus . My computer crashed and my monitor continues to say it is in sleep mode. Windows cannot be seen due to the HDMI not establishing. I cannot use windows and do not know what to do next??? Does anyone know how to help me? I am running windows 7 on a 64 bit system

If you mean that the monitor is simply in some kind of sleep mode and you don't see anything but a black screen all the time, and you suspect that the system is actually running, then try unplugging the monitor from its power cord, leave it 2 minutes with no power, and connect the power cord again. Don't forget, after that, to check the status of the power button of the monitor.

If you meant something else, then I apologize for mentioning something that has nothing to do with your problem.

I tried this. When I first start the computer there is a window that says VGA acitve HDMI not active the screen then turns black and there is a white cursor in the top right corner. This has happened in the past if I leave the computer on in a few days it just starts working. I cannot load my monitor cd becasue I cannot see windows programs. The monitor has a set defaults I try that also nothing. I am trying to avoid taking this to a shop and it is 3 years old. I have no idea, as far as virus scans there are none. Thanks

After unplugging the monitor, you should move your mouse and press some key at the keyboard (like <esc>). Then re-plug it, and move again your mouse and press again some key.

Can you disconnect the monitor from your system and test it in a known working computer (friend or neighbor)?

You could also try testing this monitor as external screen of someone's laptop/notebook/netbook.

Can you see all the monitor options/settings from the built in menu? This menu should work even if no system is plugged in, so this option is available no matter VGA or whatever.

Set all the options at around 70% (like contrast and so on).

There should be a <reset> function in the monitor controls. Try it.

How are you running antivirus programs if your monitor is not showing anything? Not that you couldn't, but you wouldn't know the status of the scan.

If you try using some Linux OS (from UFD or CD/DVD ) or some live CD (or UBCD), the same happens? I mean, is this happening no matter the booting method or OS?

Have you checked the BIOS options? Can you even get into the BIOS and see its screen? If you can, then set the monitor to be "on" and the video from the correct video card and method (VGA). Set the power-saving options of the BIOS settings to be "off". In the BIOS settings, there is a "waking methods" or "waking IRQs" or "waking events". Besides setting the power-saving options in the BIOS as "not working / off / no saving", sett also the waking events to include your mouse and keyboard.

Can you test your system with another monitor (from friend or neighbor)? As with the case where you test your monitor with another system, this may tell you if the problem is the monitor (or its configuration, or its cables), or the problem actually comes from your video card or your BIOS settings.

If you can (not always possible), while testing a different monitor with your system, or your monitor in a different system, try also changing the cables to/from the monitor.

It is not so clear to me what exactly you mean with "if I leave the computer on in a few days it just starts working".

In any case, I gave you some testing methods you should try. Some of them may sound like I am kidding or something. I'm not. I am just throwing ideas. Who knows?

I ran the the linux boot cd and ran the anti virus software that with Noron tell me there are no virus's on my computer. I set the monitor to default nothing, I went into the monitor settings and set it to VGA then it said no input signal. This certain HP has to have VGA and HDMI cables to the monitor. I went into F10 when booting up and set everything to default, there is no way I can get into CMOS and if the Linux cd had step by step instructions I could do it. But, I am not advanced without help. I never made my backup CDS with Norton, so I guess I have learned my lesson. Guess I will take it to the shop. I ran bios through the Linux cd it says monitor is set to VGA. I plugged it into my laptop (second computer) it works fine. So I think windows just won't boot up. Thank you for your help
