Why can't you use Partition Magic to move the partition back to the
front of the HDD again?

I CANT

#3 Post by JFTM » Wed Mar 16, 2005 3:44 pm

CAUSE I DIT IT FROM WINDOWS AND IT WONT BOOT WINDOWS... I DONT HAVE PARTITION MAGIC BOOT DISK.

I FOUND MY PROBLEM IS GETTING BIGGER... SOME PART OF THE WIN PARTITION (WHERE BOOT INFO IS STORED I GUESS) IS CORRUPT SO I CANT MAKE IT BOOTABLE.

I ALSO CHEQUED THE MBR AND I THINK I MESSED UP. HOW CAN I RECOVER MY INFO FROM THE WIN PARTITION? IVE USED ACTIVE PARTITION RECOVERY BUT I CANT WRITE A PARTITION IMAGE TO THE SAME FISICAL HD. ALSO IF I MANAGE TO DO THAT HOW CAN I RESTORE THE PARTITION WITHOUT RESTORING THE CORRUPT SECTORS.

THE LAST THINK IVE TIED IS TO INSTALL LINUX IN ANOTHER PARTITION SO I CAN ACCESS THE OTHER PARTITION FROM THERE AND RECOVER SOME FILES BUT IT WOULD NOT BOOT FROM LINUX NEITHER. THATS WHY I THINK I MESSED SOMETHING IN THE MBR.

I DESPERATED!!!!! NEED SOME HELP PLEASE!!!!

I can't help specifically with your booting problem now;
(and may not be able to at all), but let's start with
a little background information to see what you're working
with:

How many physical disk drives are installed in the computer?
Do you have access to a USB drive, USB pen-drive, or a network?
Did you backup your system before running PM?
On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your Linux skills?
Do you have UBCD 3.2? Is it the Full version (with Insert)?

Before attempting to repair your problem, you're going to want
to get a backup, at least of your data files so the situation
does not go from bad to disastrous. By answering the questions
above we'll be able to see what you have to work with in order
to accomplish the backup and can advise how to do it.

Once you have your data safely tucked away, we can look at
your MBR/partition issues.

As far as I'm aware, Active Partition Recovery will only recover
a partition you've saved, and that of course, must be a non-corrupt
copy of your MBR.

I'll check back later tonight to see what you say.

OK THKS!!

ANSWERS:

1.- 1 FISICAL HD

- FLOPPY
- CD BURNER
2.- USB flash drive (512 mb)
Network (just workgroup via router)

3.- NO BACKUP
4.- 2
5.- UBCD v.3.2 (NO INSERT)

NOTES:

My computer is a HP NoteBook (have the system restore cd's that are disk image of the original HD - made with some PowerQuest tool).

I'm interested only in somre critical files, if the entire partition is recoverd thats ok, but if its easier to backup only some files would be better.

all the "critical files" make about 1 gb

THAKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!

THE UBCD IS JUST EXCELENT THERE ARE MANY TOOLS ONCE I WANTED (BEFORE THIS) AND NEVER FOUD/HAVE THE TIME TO MAKE THE BOOT CD.

HOPE YOU CAN HELP...

If you need to easily recover some files, have you tried the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows? Not to harp on the UBCD, as I LOVE the UBCD and use it everyday (actually in conjunction with the UBCD4Win as you can combine them), but doing some tasks like you need in Windows is easier than in DOS. You can either burn files to CD or transfer over a network to another computer or something. Also may be of use in recovering your Windows installation. :)

If you got your computer from Dell or Gateway or something, you do legally own a copy of XP (if that's what it came with) even if they didn't send you a full blown XP CD. But, I'm not sure if you can just download an ISO of XP from Microsoft, but I've heard of others calling or emailing MS and getting them to send a regular XP installation CD so that they have one just in case, since they already own a license through their Dell/Gateway/etc. purchase.

Anyway, if you get everything figured out, let me know how it goes. Sorry I can't provide much more than this and I can't provide a working ISO of the UBCD4Win (because, as you said, of copyright issues). I hope all goes well. :)

IVE RESOLVED COPYRIGHT ISSUE ABOUT WINDOWS XP...

YOU CAN ASK FOR A MEDIA INSTALATION ( WINXP CD ) FROM ANY MICROSOFT RESELLER AND ITS ABOUT 7 DLLS. AND ALSO CAN BUY A LICENSE THAT ITS ABOUT 90 DLS OR LESS FOR ACADEMIC...

THE LARGE CORPORATIONS USUALLY BUY 100'S OF LICENSES AND FEW INSTALLATION MEDIAS AS ITS CHEAPER THAN BUYING 100'S OF BOXED WINDOWS, AND BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONLY FEW GUYS TO DO THE JOB.

ITS FUNNY I GUESS

It definitely sounds like UBCD Windows is your best bet
for making a backup if you have the media to build it.
As far as the license goes, look on the bottom of your
laptop for a Windows sticker; this is your license. So
all you need it the media.

If for some reason you are unable to get your Win UBCD
built, you can go the Linux route, but there will be many
things you'll have to do/learn to get your backup.

Let us know if you need assistance making a backup using
a Linux bootable.

Although there may be members here that are familiar with
UBCD Win, your best bet is to post questions to that
forum. The projects are separate, with different maintainers.
(I personally, don't know much about UBCD Win).

You should check out their FAQ, because it looks like it may
help with your situation. In the FAQ, it mentioned that drive
letters may differ when you're in the bootable environment, so
if you see other drive letters, check those as well. It also
sounds like they have a "Find Lost Drive" option; not sure
what it does so check it out.

Lastly, please do not compose in CAPS; it is generally frowned
upon in electronic communications.

Please don't hesitate to post back if you need some more help;
but don't expect much help in this forum regarding UBCD Win.

Best,
Charles

Yes, as bldrdash said, it's better to post in the UBCD4Win forums as they can help you there better. When I suggested you to use the UBCD4Win, I didn't mean to advertise it or frown upon the UBCD, as I really love both CDs. I don't mean any harm, I just thought the UBCD4Win could help better. As for your problem, please create a new topic in the UBCD4Win forums and either I or someone else will help you. Thanks. :)
