no support for Vortex86MX?
support please for the Vortex86MX? just received a number of these new thin clients...
Selecting Partition Magic (as well as some other utilities):
Loading /pmagic/pmagic/bzImage ... ok
Loading /pmagic/pmagic/initramfs ... ok
This kernel requires the following features not present on the cpu
cmov
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your cpu
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortex86
Thanks in advance

Re: no support for Vortex86MX?
One of the next test versions of Parted Magic should work (released after today):

So have a few days of patience, and try it then.

Try Parted Magic 6.3. The i486 version should work for sure.

Re: no support for Vortex86MX?
well, when I boot my laptop with 6.3 it seems to work allright, but when I boot the Vortex86MXIcecube wrote:Try Parted Magic 6.3. The i486 version should work for sure.

The last couple of messages are:
Setting up system devices... DONE
Searching for pmagic-6.3.sqfs...
The pmagic-6.3.sqfs file could not be found.
Report this incident to the forum and if possible attach a directory listing of the media.
Typing exit will reboot but hangs at Initializing USB controllers...
Tried a cold reboot selecting the default (without language selection) and it seems to get by the pmagic-6.3.sqfs problem, and after a __real__ __slow__ startup, I get the pmagic GUI
but after a moment or two, it pops up an Xorg configure screen.
I tried selecting default Xorg and the GUI came back and seems ok for now.
I'll test a bit more, but is seems too slow to startup for anything useful.
Re: no support for Vortex86MX?
The problem "might" not be related to your specific Vortex89MX cpu, but to some other part of the same system like the usb controller for example (or it could be related to some problem in PartedMagic under the French boot menu?).risto3 wrote:well, when I boot my laptop with 6.3 it seems to work allright, but when I boot the Vortex86MX

I am sure that Icecube and PartedMagic's Team should know about this much more than I, but about the system being slow, I wouldn't expect it to be (too much) faster with PMagic 6.3.

In PM 6.3, there is an i486 kernel option, and the normal i686. Your Vortex86 system "should" run with the i486, but probably most of the GUI programs in PMagic 6.3 would work slow, or not at all.
In PM 6.3, the i486 might be useful for Pentium II for example, but it is probably too much for a Vortex86.
An i386 Linux would be helpful for your case, but then, again, it would need all the programs to work accordingly. Of course non-GUI programs should work "better".
Your report could help PartedMagic (and again Icecube should know about this much much more than me, for sure), but I would like to suggest looking at this using a different perspective.
If you could share with us your goals, what you want to achieve using PartedMagic, maybe we could suggest alternatives from UBCD (or others) that may work better in your system.
This suggestion, by all means doesn't mean that you should stop reporting about PartedMagic, so please continue with reports and suggestions about anything in UBCD.
PS: The amount of RAM is also a key factor.
Re: no support for Vortex86MX?
Try the second boot option. I doesn't need that much RAM (and doesn't extract the whole lzma compressed squash file to RAM, which can be slow on old CPUs).
If you have problems with Xorg, try the vesa menu option.

Re: no support for Vortex86MX?
For information, the system is intended to be used primarily for thin clients (rdesktop and vnc) and potentially for a sort of lan based kiosk with primarily a web browser (ex:Firefox) to access various services.
The system has a 512MB ram, ethernet, builtin VGA ethernet usb and an SD slot.
perhaps this link helps:

forgot to say that I'd like to get thinstation or 2X working from a UBCD boot menu... off to a rough start.

Re: no support for Vortex86MX?
Well, 512 MB of RAM should be enough for any UBCD tool or PartedMagic, but PartedMagic "may" need a more updated CPU to run GUI tools correctly.
So, again, if you could mention here for what purpose you need PartedMagic to run under this particular system, maybe we could suggest you an alternative tool more suited for your CPU.

Re: no support for Vortex86MX?
Just for information, upgraded UBCD to 5.1.1 with Parted Magic at 6.6... The problem is back again ;-(
Re: no support for Vortex86MX?
Well, I don't know how you solved it before. This seems to be more related to PartedMagic, and less to UBCD.
Since you don't say what's your goal, we can't offer you any workaround or alternative tool that would work correctly in your system so to achieve the same objective.
You could try a customization, updating UBCD with the latest PartedMagic (see the UBCD wiki tutorial).
