Hd backup

Hi, im just wondering if Ultimate boot disk contains a program to copy a complete hd to a file on a second hd like Norton ghost and Acronis True Image does. If not does any one know one that i maybe able to put on the ultimate boot disk my self, thanks in advanced.

Thanks for your help PPB, with the programs you specified i can basically create a image of my C hd and save it as a file on my 2nd internal hard drive, is that correct.

Also if they all do the same job which program would you recommend i use, thanks,

I've created an account just to respond to this message.

I too am looking for an imaging program and have tried all of the above mentioned programs on the UBCD.

As far as I could tell, they could only back up an entire disk.

My laptop only has one internal disk split into 2 partitions. With my fresh Windows reinstall C: is about 4Gb, so I want to create an image of this partition and burn it to a DVD. I could first write the image to my D: partition and then burn it to a DVD in Windows if necessary.

But the key is that I have to be able to restore the partition from the DVD disk.

Is there anything for doing this, or will I have to buy Norton's Ghost or something similar? Obviously I'd rather use freeware, and I'm surprised there isn't anything on the UBCD for doing this already.

No I didn't, but I will try it tonight.

What I forgot to mention is that my C: is a 10Gb partition with 4Gb used. I only want to write an image of this used 4Gb. I'm not sure if Partition Saving will do this.

Nah it doesn't, but if you defragment it and fill the empty sectors with zeros, the compression ratio should be great.

Yeah that's right, it doesn't. I had a play with it last night.

Any other suggestions? I think I might actually have to buy Ghost or something similar. I've hardly ever buy software.

Well in fact I spoke a bit fast : it can be done but not for every file format.

Well this may be a bit off topic but I recently found a tool called Drivemage XML from http://runtime.org.
Its free and there is a plugin for it to be included with BartPE. I have tested it on a few machines and it works good.
You can make a partiton backup while in Windows. It uses volume locking or shadow copy to copy the files in use..
You can save it as one big file or split it into cd sized files. Works only on Windows XP home or pro.

I'd still prefer to use a little dos or linux based tool while the partition is not in use :hmm:
I think it's safer whatever precautions could be taken with this tool, and at least it's not dependent on Windows.
