The following is just my personal opinion, FWIW.

Providing alternative links to relevant info that can't be found elsewhere might be useful. But IMO the main page of UBCD should NOT use links to sites that are not the original ones, even when the original links seem currently down.

IMO, the links in the main page should be updated to new ones ONLY when the original site has been restructured or moved by the original author or maintainer of the specific tool. A certain site that just happens to have related info (or that just copied a file for download) should NOT be linked to from the website. Adding such alternative info / links in the forum might be more appropriate.

In particular, I am strongly against linking to "driver-repositories", or to warez-related sites, or to sites that just "steal" from UBCD. Those sites might have useful info, but I wouldn't link to them from the website, and sure not from the main page.

Moreover, the old links are sometimes useful, to find the original info in sites such as mirrors and web-archive-machine sites. Changing the links to point to sites that just happen to have related info or downloads is not a good practice IMO, specially when those other sites can be found by performing a web search and they don't have original info.

Also, the main page should keep links to information, not direct downloads. And if any update is performed on the main website, I hope Victor makes first a copy of the previous version and publish it on the wiki; specially the main page. Older versions of the main page used to have some links that, for whichever reason, are not currently included (the text is present, but the link is gone).

On the matter of specific updates and other comments in the OP...

Some tools are listed twice in the main page because they are a reflect of the categories in UBCD. This is not a mistake.

SGD(2) is not duplicated. Those are 2 different tools, from the same website.

DBAN 2.2.7 is no longer in beta.

Some beta software might be appropriate for UBCD, but it shouldn't replace the stable versions. There is always the possibility to customize.

Ranish 2.43 is NOT less buggy.

“Server” versions of tools for memory testing should be part of customizations only.

I am not (yet) specifically listing here those links to which I am STRONGLY against, but I might later on.

Anyway, just my personal opinion.

I admit I have not thought as much as I should regarding link situations.

After reading your post I would suggested the following guidelines for the main page listings:

- no linking to "driver-repositories" (softpedia, softoogle, majorgeeks, CNET, etc)
- in case of dead sites, leaving the old link but mentioning in the comments that the site is defunct
- in case of dead sites that have a new link (mostly Hitachi, IBm, Samsung, Seagate disc tools) I would link to the new location
- no direct linking (FIPS)

What I meant with SGD/(2) entry is that maybe we should add an explanation why both versions are included like it is done with other tools that are present in both versions (DLG diagnostic, GWSCAN, HUTIL, etc) however after reading the documentation on the website it does mention that they are based on different systems (GRUB2 and GRUB) and so are indeed different programs like you said and not different version like I assumed.

As for DBAN, the main page mentions "preview releases: DBAN 2.2.7 Beta" despite the beta part not being mentioned in the file name.

Regarding Memtest86, dO you think that only "server" (b) or only "regular" (a) versions should be included ? Didn't quite get what you meant.

Thanks for the clarification about double listings and Ranish 2.43 .

Looking forward of hearing your thoughts on this one.

If victor needs / wants, that "etc" may need to be specified, so to avoid linking to repositories and other "unofficial" sites (which should not be blindly trusted, specially if they are not related to the specific tool).

The worst case IMO is linking to warez and other sites that bluntly "steal" Victor's work. The fact that they may have useful info (in part copied from UBCD's site, among others) doesn't mean they deserve to be referenced in the main site.

IMO, linking to the respective (“official”) websites with information for each tool should be respected as much as possible. There are other places to post links to alternative sites or links to additional information.

- in case of dead sites, leaving the old link but mentioning in the comments that the site is defunct
- in case of dead sites that have a new link (mostly Hitachi, IBm, Samsung, Seagate disc tools) I would link to the new location
Relevant and current (valid) links for HDD tools were already provided before. I don't know if they got lost during some procedure in the website. In any case, only 2 HDD companies are still relevant. The others are for reference only.

I shall insist about copying the main page to the wiki before changing any information (including links).
- no direct linking (FIPS)
<snip>
As for DBAN, the main page mentions "preview releases: DBAN 2.2.7 Beta" despite the beta part not being mentioned in the file name.
The website for DBAN may not be updated with current info. The downloads are separated, for beta versions and final releases.
Regarding Memtest86, dO you think that only "server" (b) or only "regular" (a) versions should be included ? Didn't quite get what you meant.
I was not accurate enough in my comment regarding this point; I should explain better  .

You mentioned the availability of more than one version, and the possible need to explain why there are more than one version included in UBCD. This might have different interpretations.

First, there are different tools. From the several tools including the word "memtest" in their names, "memtest+" and "memtest86" are somewhat related, but they are still 2 different tools (and, in addition, other unrelated tools also include the word "memtest" in their names). "Memtest+ / 86 " are developed separately. UBCD includes both tools.

In particular (and in addition to other "memtest" tools), 2 versions of "memtest86" are included in UBCD, just because some features included in the older version of "memtest86" were dropped out from the newer one.

By the time UBCD 5.1.1 was released, memtest86 v.4.0 was available. Version 4.0a was released several months later, and version 4.0b was also released after UBCD 5.1.1 with Servers in mind.

So, what I was trying to say (but I wasn't clear at all) is that "memtest86" versions 3.5b and 4.0a should be included (the latter being an update of version 4.0, already in UBCD5.1.1.), together with the rest of the other "*memtest*" tools, while "memtest86" version 4.0b should be left out. So, several different "*memtest*" tools are included, and in particular 2 versions of "memtest86" should be included, leaving out a third version (4.0b, for Servers).
Thanks for the clarification about double listings and Ranish 2.43 .
Sure. Thank you for sharing the list.

You can still customize UBCD and add Ranish 2.43 too.

FWIW, there are additional updates available for the next UBCD, like Seatools TUI, Syslinux (which also includes eltorito.sys, mdiskchk.com, etc), some auxiliary tools (used in the scripts) and FreeDOS-related software (kernel, USB drivers, memory managers). PartedMagic modules need updates too.

Independently of the links for the main page, the list of updates is useful anyway, but it should be noted that some of the versions in the OP are already included in UBCD 5.1.1.

Best Regards,
Ady.

Not trying to nitpick here, more wanting to get to the bottom of the terminology but the link for 2.2.7 Beta on DBAN's homepage is linking to the file located in the dban

directory (not dban-beta).

We know that there was a 2.2.6 beta but there is no such version in "dban-beta", however it is in the "dban" directory.

What I am trying to say here is that I think Darik is posting all new updates (betas included) into "dban", regardless of having a second beta folder.

This question was asked in DBAN forums but never answered.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dban/fo ... ge=8414835

I know remembered why I used driver repositories. It was due to softpedia link on the ViVARD entry. Hopefully Victor will chim in on this.

Keeping a previous copy of the page in the Wiki is a grea idea !

I see your point about 4.0b version now. Again, I incorrectly assumed that "b" somehow stands for "server" however only 4.0b (not 3.5b) is a server edition.

I am posting an updated version of the OP, using the guidelines that, I think, we agreed on. If you could comment on the problematic links and entries, I would be grateful.

Regarding DBAN, don't worry about it, at all. Version 2.2.7 has no new functionality in comparison to the official 2.2.6 release. The changes are not related to the program itself.
Keeping a previous copy of the page in the Wiki is a great idea!
The idea is that any user could check the history of the copied page, so to see changes, for example when a new version of UBCD is released. Of course this page should only be editable by specific authorized users. The table can (relatively) easily be transformed to wiki format so to be copied.

!BIOS 3.20 :
Nothing new.

Intel Processor Identification Utility (P4 and above) :
Update to latest version.

Mersenne Prime Test 27.7 :
Updating this one is not so direct as other tools. Note: For Syslinux 4.xx, probably it would be better to use linux.c32 to boot ALL the Linux-based hardware test utilities.

Stress :
Update to latest version 1.04.

StressCPU :
Update link to http://www.gromacs.org/Downloads/User_c ... r_software

x86test :
Leave the old link as it is http://www.vortex.prodigynet.co.uk/x86test/. Add in the "Notes" column the alternative link http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/x86test

Super Grub2 Disk :
Update to latest version.

PLoP Boot Manager :
Update to latest version.

Gujin :
Update to latest version.
boot.kernel.org (BKO)
Notes: No info about the version in the UBCD tool list
No specific version should be posted in UBCD main page.
boot.kernel.org / gpxe and additional related sites. Maybe add ipxe ? (IIRC, already in PMagic.)

AMSET (Maxtor) :
Please avoid linking to warez-related sites from the main page. If Victor finds an old link from Maxtor / Seagate that used to contain information about this utility, that's the link that should be used in the main page, unless a new "official" link is found.

Change Definition Utility :
Add http://storage.toshiba.com/storage-serv ... -utilities (Note: This same link has been already provided before. Maybe the link was lost during some procedure in the UBCD website.)

Feature Tool (IBM/Hitachi) 2.15 :
Update link to http://www.hgst.com/support/index-files ... eatureTool

UATA100 (Seagate) :
Please avoid linking (from the main website) to sites that actually copy the info from UBCD without even giving credit. I think there used to be some "official" link somewhere.

UDMA Utility (for Fujitsu MPD/MPE/MPF series HDDs) and
UDMA Utility (for Fujitsu MPG series HDDs) :
Update link to http://storage.toshiba.com/storage-serv ... ities#udma (Note: This same link has been already provided before. Maybe the link was lost during some procedure in the UBCD website.)

ATA Diagnostic Tool (Fujitsu) :
Update link to http://storage.toshiba.com/storage-serv ... -utilities (Note: This same link has been already provided before. Maybe the link was lost during some procedure in the UBCD website.)

Drive Fitness Test (IBM/Hitachi) 4.16 :
Update link to http://www.hgst.com/support/index-files ... nloads#DFT

ES-Tool (Samsung):
There is no known / public "official" new links. The old link should be used, as it is still useful to search for information in other sites and in the WebBackMachine.
Please avoid linking to warez-related sites from the main UBCD website. The current version included in UBCD is NEWER than the one posted in other sites.

HDAT2 4.9.1 beta
http://www.hdat2.com/download.html
Notes: Current UBCD is using 4.8.1 version. Maybe an explanation why two version are present ?
From the help text in the boot menu:
“HDAT2 V4.8.1: Latest version of HDAT2, but device-level testing is disabled. This issue is planned to be resolved in V4.9. In the mean time, use V4.5.3 for device-level testing.”

So that's the reason to include more than one version. Since V.4.9 is still in beta stage, I'm not sure it is worth adding a third version of HDAT in UBCD. The current beta downloads include V.4.5.3 too. Adding v.4.9 in a customized UBCD is easy too. Victor would need to decide which versions to add and which ones to left for customizations only.

MHDD32 :
Update links to http://hddguru.com/software/2005.10.02-MHDD/
As occurs in other cases, the reason for 2 versions is that some features were dropped in newer versions. That's why the links point to information for the user to read.
(BTW, the same site also contains information about Victoria.)

PowerMax (Maxtor/Quantum) 4.09 :
No link should be added to the main site. The link mentioned in the above post is / was NOT "official". The same information can be found in other sites, with more updated downloads too (as version 4.23, which is the "official" version) but other versions “dropped” some functionallity. Both versions of PowerMax should be kept in UBCD. The Syslinux arguments for both PowerMax entries would probably be better with "APPEND raw".

SCSIMax (Maxtor/Quantum) :
Generally speaking, the links should point to information about the respective tool, not necessarily to the download. In this particular case, the link contains first the download and then the information. Since Seagate changes its website structure relatively frequently, I'm not sure how long the link would be "current". In any case, I am posting here your proposed link with a slight correction:
http://www.seagate.com/em/en/support/in ... master-dl/
AFAIK, the tool itself is already up-to-date in UBCD.

g4u :
Update to latest version.

HDClone :
Update to latest version.

Partition Saving :
Update to latest version.

DISKMAN4 :
Beware that the latest version available is (and has been for years and will remain) in alpha stage
. This program is not for everyone, thus I would keep in UBCD the stable version only, as it is now (and has been for years) and would leave the potential addition of the alpha/beta edition for customizations only.
Update link to http://www.diskman.co.uk/ (Maybe the link was previously lost during some procedure in the UBCD website.)

PTS DiskEditor :
The link provided in the above post may contain useful information, but it is not the official site. Adding it here in the forum for general info is more adequate, but should not be added to the first column of the main page of the UBCD website. Perhaps Victor would consider it ( http://thestarman.pcministry.com/tool/de/PTS-DE.htm ) for the "Notes" column; maybe. The official site (mostly about their commercial software) is located at http://www.phystechsoft.com/.

Darik's Boot :
IIRC, the version of DBAN 2.2.6 included in UBCD 5.1.1 was adapted for older CPUs. Since DBAN version 2.2.7 is not supposed to add any new features, I'm not sure if Victor would update it. FWIW, for older systems there is still version 1.0.7 available as a floppy image for UBCD customizations.

HDShredder :
Nothing new.

Fujitsu Erase Utility :
Add link http://storage.toshiba.com/storage-serv ... ties#erase (Note: This same link has been already provided before. Maybe the link was lost during some procedure in the UBCD website.)

DiscWizard (Seagate/Maxtor) :
AFAIK, no changes. The Windows-based version has been updated since UBCD 5.1.1 was released, but I have not checked the latest version of the Linux-based version.

FIPS :
I'll leave this without comments.

AleGr MEMTEST :
No changes. Even when the original site is down, the original link is useful to find old copies of the relevant information. Thus, the original link should stay, unless the author moved his site to a new location with all the relevant information about the tool.

DIMM_ID :
Please don't link to sites that abuse of information posted elsewhere (including, and most specially, from UBCD) and without giving credit. This is specially relevant for this particular utility. If I am not mistaken, Victor should correct the License information in the respective column of the UBCD homepage.

Memtest86 :
Update version 4.0 to 4.0a. Version 3.5b should still be included, and version 4.0b should be left for customizations only.

Windows Memory Diagnostic :
AFAIK, no changes.

Kon-Boot :
No changes.

ATAPI CDROM Identification :
Update link in main page to : http://www.tpmail.ru/dstef/

Parallel Port Information System :
Please avoid linking (from the main page) to sites that actually copy the info from UBCD without even giving credit.

ASTRA :
Update to latest version.

HDT :
Update c32 module from latest stable version of Syslinux.

PCI :
No changes. Even if the site is no longer available, having the link helps find relevant information.

-----

I shall repeat that these are just my opinions, and I would suggest / request from Victor to copy the table from the homepage (including links) to the wiki before each and every change. Sometimes, old links are more useful for finding relevant information than newer links.

Hopefully this post clarifies my comments from previous posts.

Hi guys, thanks for your input on this. As you can see, there are many points to discuss. I will focus on one in this reply. Others will come later.

I think putting old UBCD indexes in the wiki is a great idea, but I need someone to help me. I can send you all the index.html of the previous releases if you can help to format and add them to the wiki.

I am also able to set up torrent/HTTP download of old releases in the wiki, something that I remember ady mentioned before.

I agree in principle to this idea and will adopt it for the next release. The original link will be maintained and marked as unreachable in the comments section. Where available, a wayback engine link will be added in addition to the original link.

Just a note about Ranish Partition Manager and DBAN.

Ranish Partition Manager was reverted to stable because some users specifically encountered problems with the beta and recommended that it should not be included as an option because it could screw up the partition table. The stable 2.40 is apparently quite robust in this regard.

DBAN beta was included because the older version does not support SATA HDDs. Although marked as beta, no one has reported any problems with it so far.

Did not knew that hiren and omniboot were stealing UBCD's content. Noted.

Which would you not include the version info here ? Since we're not dealing directly with Linux kernel ?

I agree to leaving the version choices (betas or not) to Victor (and to folks who know more than me about it :) ).

Super Grub2 Disk 2.00 beta 1
http://www.supergrubdisk.org/
Notes: Current UBCD is using 1.98s1 version.
As is the usual policy, unless there is some compelling reason to include a beta (eg. DBAN), I will stick with the stable line.
boot.kernel.org (BKO) 3.7-rc2 / 3.6.6 (2012-11-05)
http://boot.kernel.org/
Notes: No info about the version in the UBCD tool list
This simply loads a stub that lets you boot to several linux distro using PXE. It is meaningless to include the version of the current linux kernel!

I am commenting (again) about DBAN just to avoid any possible confusions. There are already stable versions 2.2.6 and 2.2.7. There is no reason to use betas in this case at this moment. If the current version in UBCD is based on the stable 2.2.6, then there is no reason to update it in UBCD (except that users may not keep requesting to update it in the future). I'll say it again: DBAN stable 2.2.7 has the same features as DBAN stable 2.2.6. The only doubt I have now is if the version of DBAN included in UBCD is based on the older beta 2.2.6, or on the stable 2.2.6.

Regarding SGD2, there is no reason not to update to its latest version, even if it is beta. In any case, PMagic also uses the latest SGD2, but having it independently of PMagic might be useful for systems with less resources.

AKAIK, here's the situation. V4.5.3 was basically the last stable release with device-level testing. After that, device-level tests were disabled. V4.9.1 beta 1 re-enables all tests.

So I probably will continue to include V4.5.3, and stick with V4.8.1 until V4.9.1 comes out of beta.

Older version includes ATA/SCSI Terminal for scripting. It's in the help, but I will add it to the notes in the application table as well.

The author gave authorization for this particular version of DIMM_ID to be distributed with UBCD. This is in the help, but I will put it in the "Notes" column as well.

@Victor,

As I already commented above, I think you (Victor) said that the version ( 2.2.6 ) of DBAN included in UBCD was adapted to support older systems (instead of having to use the older DBAN 1.0.7 for them). Other than that, 2.2.7 is the same as 2.2.6, except that it adds an "ad" and updates ISOLINUX. Since UBCD doesn't need those changes, and all the features from the stable 2.2.6 remain the same in 2.2.7, it's up to you to decide what to do.

Regarding HDAT and DIMM_ID, I have already commented about each and every item, one by one. If you re-read my previous posts, most items are already answered.

I also posted where a program update is needed (from those listed in the OP) and where other info is relevant (like updating with my suggested links for example).

Please don't call the integration of the UBCD into OmniBoot "stealing". I am giving a lot of attention to the UBCD on OmniBoot and didn't edit any true origin as for instance renaming anything like the fdubcd.iso etc. Of course I have heavily changed a lot of the whole boot process and developed a new idea of a tool collection. But we should all work together, I don't feel a need for competition. Actually the last release of the UBCD is quite a long time ago, and instead of registering at the forum and asking Victor to do something, I just started my own creative flow. Now I have not the slightest problem, if any of my creativity flows back into the UBCD. I am glad I finally could get into contact with Victor about it.

But yes, it makes no sense, linking to OmniBoot, when OmniBoot actually got the specific tool from the UBCD-distribution! I can only agree with this opinion.

As for DIMM_ID, I kept it integrated into the UBCD and didn't extract it to integrate it somewhere else. I hope this is OK, otherwise I feel sad, but I will of course remove DIMM_ID from the UBCD when integrating the UBCD into OmniBoot.
