OK, point taken. Lemme think about it. I hope the others can chime in on this as well.

@Don: I just want to find out from you:

- Does the current mkeyb included in FDUBCD works for foreign keyboards?
- Are there any improvements/updates that can be made? If so, any pointers?

Thanks!

mkeyb works perfectly for all languages which also appear in the selction menu after FreeDOS has booted. When fdubcd.iso is booted the parameter kblang= with one of the abreviations used in that mentioned menu just preselects what could also be selected from that menu and the user starts with his own keyboard right away. It's 21 languages at the moment. The only enhancement that I see would be changing that keyboard-driver to the other one which is provided with FreeDOS 1.1. But with mkeyb I see nothing that could be done better.

Are there any significant improvements with the FD11 keyb over the current mkeyb? Thanks.

Maybe the following post could help with keyb and alternatives (with relevant info and relevant links): http://sourceforge.net/news/?group_id=5109&id=303638. I don't know if old bugs (fixed in latest keyb) were present in the old mkeyb too. There are pros and cons for each *keyb* alternative.

There is also a recent update for long filenames support for FreeDOS: http://sourceforge.net/news/?group_id=5109&id=309839.

About 100 different keyboards compared to about 20? Just have a look at /FREEDOS/PACKAGES/BASE/KEYBX.ZIP.

Have already updated to 0.41c. Thanks for the info!

OK, I will take a look and see if I can integrate it into FDUBCD.

That's great news and I hope, it's not too tough a challenge!

Btw, I tried myself to update to Mersenne 27.7 and stress 1.0.4. I was not successful with the current kernel, even after resolving two new dependencies (of Mersenne). Always got a seg fault. So I switched to the Slitaz-Kernel (2.4 MB) and some parts of Slitaz-ramdisk-filesystem (part 4 and 3) and after a few adjustements of Gert Hulselmans scripts everything works perfectly :)

With which version of Syslinux?
Were you using linux.c32, or the LINUX directive?

Preferable, use Syslinux 4.06 and linux.c32 (from the same version of Syslinux). If you could test this scenario using the "normal" (not Slitaz's) kernel, that would be helpful.

TIA,
Ady.

I got the seg-fault only for starting of Mersenne 27.7, not with the kernel itself. Also updating to stress 1.0.4 was no problem with the current kernel. I edited the ramdisk by first expanding the filesystem of the initrd to 48MB since Mersenne 27.7 is a lot larger and wouldn't fit into the current initrd. Then I had two error messages of Mersenne 27.7 pointing to two libraries which I included. But this led only to seg-fault error and I had no idea what else to do. I very much suspect the kernel not to support some calls that are made by the new Mersenne 27.7.

However it's working with Slitaz perfectly and I love Slitaz. It's the smallest full functional distro and stupid easy to mod for whatever you want - pertaining it's tiny footprint. OmniBoot for instance features a micro pxe-server, which uses 21,5MB of the original Slitaz-Distro and a 65kB extension containing a nfs-server, a tftp addon and the start-up scripts. For CPU-Stress I'm using 15,4MB of the original Distro and the cpustress-addon now has 5.2MB - due to that large Mersenne 27.7.

Did you try Explorer09's patch (CPUstress test v2.1expl4)? That's what I am currently using in V5.2a1.

UBCD V5.2a1 is available for download:

http://ubcd.mirror.fusa.be/ubcd52a1.iso
md5sum: 74c1cc4e0f317803af32d3abb4df263c
sha1sum: 0fedba0e39471192495740eea7815ce65d12817f

This is a checkpoint for all the updates I have made so far:

- Updated grub4dos to V0.4.5c (2012-11-17).
- Super Grub Disk is now deprecated and replaced with Super Grub2 Disk.
- Added BOOTMGR 05-AUG-2012.
- Remove diskcheck.pdf because it is not available.
- Removed AleGr MEMTEST V2.00 because it cannot be made to work with FreeDOS, which requires at least some form of XMS memory manager to be present (to create a RAM disk).
- Removed CD Index because it cannot be made to work with FreeDOS in its current form.
- Use one level "/pmagic" instead of two-level "/pmagic/pmagic" to better facilitate integration with other multi-boot distro. Thanks to ady for the suggestion.
- Adopted Explorer09's patch for F-Prot virus def update script.
- Updated CPUStress image to V2.1expl4. Thanks to Explorer09 for updating what was originally contributed by IceCube.
- Updated Mersenne Prime Test to V27.7.
- Updated Stress to V1.04.
- Updated F-Prot Antivirus to V6.2.2. Included Explorer09's patch (to XFProt (2.4expl3) to make it work with the new version of fprot. Thanks to Explorer09 to working on this.
- Added TAFT V1.2.
- Fixed bug in V:\ubcd\root\ubcd\tools\linux\mkfdubcd\mkfdubcd.sh. Thanks to Reinhard Biegel for pointing this out.
- Fixed tools\linux\antivirus\clamav.sh, which stopped working due to various external changes. Thanks to ady for the update.
- Moved "/boot/isolinux/isolinux.bin" to "/boot/syslinux" and make both syslinux/isolinux use the same "/boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg" config file. Thanks to ady for the suggestion.
- Moved boot.kernel.org (BKO) to "Others" category.
- Updated ASTRA to V6.01.
- Updated Darik's Boot and Nuke to 2.2.7.
- Updated DISKMAN4 to V4.2A3, the last release for this app.
- Updated DOSLFN in FDUBCD to V0.41c.
- Updated FDUBCD to use HimemX and JEMM386.
- Updated files from syslinux 4.0.6.
- Updated g4u to V2.5.
- Updated Gujin to V2.8.6.
- Updated HDClone to V4.2.1.
- Updated IBM Disk Manager V9.61.
- Updated Intel Processor Identification Utility to V4.55. Thanks to ady for the update.
- Updated Memtest86 to V4.0a.
- Updated Parted Magic to 2012_09_12.
- Updated Partition Saving to V4.00.
- Updated PLoP Boot Manager to V5.0.14.
- Updated SeaTools for DOS (Text) to V1.12. Thanks to ady for the update.
- Updated UBCD FreeDOS to V1.45.

Great news and downloading. But Patrick Verner has released some new releases since 09-12, currently 11-30 is yet available.

edit: as of removing Alegr Memtest: I solved the problem with incompatibility with FD-UBCD by creating a separate image.
http://omniboot.at/images/[base]/amemtest.img.gz
(Due to the brackets I didn't manage to create a working link here, even with disabled BBCode or trying html-escape codes with or without enabled BBCode, so you have to copy the link to your address bar and maybe correct it even there!)

booted with:
LINUX /boot/syslinux/memdisk
INITRD /images/[base]/amemtest.img.gz

maybe you would also like to update xosl from version 1.1.5

to XOSL-OW116 https://sourceforge.net/projects/xosl-o ... ootFloppy/

Quote:
XOSL-OW116 is an Open Watcom port of XOSL115 released by Geurt Vos in 2000. XOSL115 is developed with the Borland C++ 3.1 tool set, XOSL-OW116 is based on the Open Watcom version 1.8 tool set. This Open Watcom Port allows for future development of XOSL using an Open Source development tool set. XOSL-OW116 has no new functionality compared to XOSL115 but it does give improved behavior on specific PC hardware. In fact XOSL115 stability issues on some PC platforms have been the reason for porting XOSL to the Open Watcom tool set in the first place. To give an example, using XOSL115 on a Compaq Armada M300 system will give the following stability issues: - Launching the Ranish Partition Manager which is embedded in the XOSL boot manager (Ctrl-P) results in a non-responsive keyboard. - Booting into the Smart Boot Manager (used to support booting from CD/DVD) results in a non-responsive keyboard. - Booting into Linux using the XOSL boot manager might not succeed because of a non-responsive keyboard after the XOSL boot manager hands over control to the Linux boot process. In the XOSL-OW116 version these stability issues have been solved by implementing an improved A20 Line Switching algorithm and by making sure that the keyboard buffer is flushed before the XOSL boot manager hands over control to the Ranish Partition manager, the Smart Boot Manager or the Operating System Boot Process. XOSL-OW116 is in no way related to XOSL2. XOSL2 only includes limited functional changes compared to XOSL115. Where XOSL115 installation will fail when during the installation process backup files can not be written onto the installation disk (which will be the case when trying to install XOSL115 from CD/DVD) XOSL2 will simply ignore this and continue with the installation. In XOSL-OW116 this is solved using a RAM disk when installing XOSL-OW116 from CD/DVD. During installation process backup files will be written onto the RAM disk. Because storage on a RAM disk is volatile (e.g. files will be lost after rebooting the system) it is up to the user to copy the backup files to a permanent storage device before rebooting the system. Files available for download:

@Victor,
Please differentiate between "updates" and "ports" and "forks". xosl 1.1.5 should be kept, whether others are included or not.

I believe this is a mistake. SG2D doesn't support grub legacy. Grub2 is completely different than grub legacy. It is correct that SGD is no longer developed, but grub legacy is still in use. There are alternatives for rescuing grub legacy systems, but they are MUCH bigger in size than SGD. Please maintain SGD included in UBCD.

FDUBCD can be started in several "modes", including customizing each startup line with F8. So I don't understand the reason not to include AleGr as it was before.

Besides that 1 report, can someone else confirm (replicate) this problem?

Quote:

It should be noted that 4.2a3 is an ALPHA version only and was never finished. The previous version is STABLE. The program is "too powerful" to be "messing around" with it.

More comments to come, according to tests.

I think because fdubcd needs a ram-disk to expand the binaries of Alegr which are included in dos.cabs only. It would only work if the unpacked binaries were included in the freedos-floppy-image which boots the freedos-cd, as I understand the situation.

The square brackets are reserved characters in the URL. Please percent-encode them or avoid these characters next time.

Yes of course, I spent a lot of time googling for the correct escape codes - yours however are again new to me, but sorry

http://omniboot.at/images/%5Bbase%5D/amemtest.img.gz

also doesn´t work...
