bootmgr compressed...which app to use from UBCD, and how?

#1 Post by Tortilla » Wed Feb 27, 2013 6:13 am

Hi,

I have my son's class PC at home, - fixed a soundcard driver problem, then made the schoolboy error of compressing the entire HDD to create disc space.

Of course, that included the boot files.

On startup, I get: bootmgr compressed (& instructions to try reboot)

With UBCD inserted I can navigate the main menu, but not much idea which app could help, nor of the exact steps needed.

It's running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I don't have the disc (could possibly get it from school, but not sure).

I would be massively grateful if anyone could help.

Thanks,

Jon

1. Start your computer from the Windows 7 installation DVD or Repair CD.
2. Select Repair your computer.
3. Load driver.
4. Go to Computer and right click drive where Windows 7 is installed.
5. Select Properties and uncheck "Compress drive to save disk space".
6. Close and restart the computer normally.

Thanks for this. I've found where to download win 7 repair .iso from, and will give it a try.

In any case, does anyone know if UBCD alone could sort this one out?

Thanks, Jon

ntfs-3g is contained in parted magic and capable of reading/writing compressed data too. Could possibly work but I guess it's safer with the original windows install disk.
