3.3 boot problems
Hello Group;
I just downloaded version 3.3 Basic from one site, and 3.3 Full from another site.
3.3 Basic boots up to the menu screen. But when I try to use a utility. It starts ti load, and then locks up.
3.3 Full will not boot up at all. I get a message saying can not load OS.
I tryied these both out on PC's that 3.2 Basic would both boot up and work.
Had to go back to version 3.2 Basic.
Any ideas as to why.

Your problem with UBCD 3.3 Full might be due to a bad ISO image, so it cannot boot the CD but tries to boot to your HDD instead, resulting in the OS loading error. You might want to check the MD5 sum (or SHA1 sum) of your ISO image to make sure it is not corrupted.
Your problem with UBCD 3.3 Basic should be machine/app specific. Try launching something like memtest86 or memtest86+ (apps that doesn't go through FreeDOS) and see if they work. If they do, and you can nail it down to a FreeDOS problem, reflect that to this forum and we can get the maintainer to take a look.

Hello Group;
I tried to run both memory test on version 3.3 basic, as suggested.
The first one listed I get funny colored boxes when it tries to launch.
The second one listed with a + just gets the copyright lines then it locks up.
I will now try to download the full version from anothe site and let you all know what happens.
Version 3.2 Basic still works on the same PC.

3.3 boot problems
If you're saying 3.2 worked fine, but are having trouble
with 3.3, try the following:
- Burn to a write-once (e.g., not RW)
- Burn at a slower speed

Hello Group;
Yes I am saying that I am haveing problems with version "3.3". Both basic, and full.
They both boot up to the main screen. But when I launch any utility I only get the first line or two, looks like copyrite info. Then they both lock up.
I am doing this at work on a system that burns many CD's a day. It is part of our job. I did try to burn at both 40, and 48X.
With version 3.2, I do not have this problem. I normally burn all of our CD's at 48X. We sell systems with 48X to 56X.
Hope this helps. "3.2" is fine here for me.

Hello Group;
Last installment on version 3.3 ISO's not booting up.
I have tried both basic, and full "3.3". I can not get a working CD. I have tried this out on two systems running Roxio 6, and Nero "5.5".
The CD's do not work after booting up to the main screen, or menu.
So I tried to burn version "3.2 Basic", on the same system useing Nero "5.5" which is used at work. The resulting CD booted up fine. I ran the memory test, it booted up and ran fine.
Can someone give me a idea or two. I did download both versions of "3.3" multiple times from a number of sources.
I will wait for " 3.4 ", and try again.

Any error message, or if it just hang, what's the last thing you see on
the screen?
the screen?
The main menu comes up fine.
But if I try to launch a utility I only get the first line or two while it is loading.
Then it locks up. One of the memory tests gives me multi colored boxes all over the screen.
Same as in my earlier posts.
What CD burning software works with version "3.3". I am useing Roxio "6", and NERO "5.5". NERO "5.5" still burns version "3.2" basic. I tried burning a new CD on the same system that I could not burn the newer "3.3" version on.

This is just a shot in the dark considering this
seems to be a unique issue: See if something like
"Virus Protection" is enabled in the BIOS and disable
it. Also try updating your BIOS if it's out of date.

More info on boot problems
Here's some more info re: UBCD 3.3 Full boot issues --
-- Ancient (1998) Compaq CRD-83228 CDROM booted UBCD when in Compaq box. Moved CDROM to AOpen AX6BC mobo with Award BIOS, circa 2000. Can't boot UBCD. Compaq/AOpen boot failures usually give GRUB error 17, else general boot error.
-- Same Compaq CDROM/AOpen happly boots Ubuntu, Knoppix, and Mepis, as well as anything else I throw at it. All Linux CD-R disks were burned with the same computer and burner that produced the UBCD disks that fail to boot.
-- The UBCD disks that won't boot in the Compaq/AOpen will boot in my other box, using a generic DVD drive. Solid boots; no fiddling.
-- Compaq CDROM is secondary master; HD is primary master. No slaves. For CDROM, BIOS set to no DMA, PIO Mode 0.

When you say "Can't boot UBCD", do you mean you don't even see the main
menu?
If you have the time, could you try UBCD 3.2 on both machines and let us
know how that goes? I am trying to isolate the problem and see whether
it's due to the latest version of CDShell we're using.

3.3 boot problems
Freshly burnt UBCD 3.2 Full boots reliably on Compaq/AOpen.
Retested UBCD 3.3 Full with same boot failures. More, below.
Procedure: Downloaded ubcd32-full.zip. Wrote, with verify. MD5sum - d8d029691ba6fdeee6c24097ba18ce1e
All CDs written with K3B, same computer, drive, and OS, using media from single spindle. No media problems noted, other than consistent UBCD 3.3 boot failure on the Compaq/AOpen, but no failures on other box.
Boot failures NEVER resulted in reaching UBCD main menu.
Nature of boot failures. Either of two:
-- Grub error 17
-- "Error booting from CD/DVD drive. Press any key to reboot"
followed by "[", 16 rectangular blocks, a large number of
periods, "]" and 80800279
HTH. UBCD is exceptionally valuable.

3.3 boot problems
This result is very puzzling.
As far as I know, "Grub error 17" is not a possible error during the
UBCD boot process, since GRUB is not involved at all.
Now, "Error booting from CD/DVD drive. Press any key to reboot" is a
error emitted by loader.bin, but I am not sure what the error code
means. I will post to the CDShell forums and see if I can find out anything.

Looks like your posting at http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=12160
may have been lost in the recent site hacking/crash.
I saw it the morning after you posted it, but it is gone now.

I was reading this new post at the CDShell forum, and it appears to be the same problem (808XXXX means unable to read from CD):
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=11569
I was wondering if you could try one of the proposed solution (resave using UltraISO with "Omit ISO 9660 version number" ticked) and let us know whether that works.
I will also be redirecting the replies from this topic:
viewtopic.php?t=142
here because I think they are the same problem, so we should focus our efforts.

UltraISO save did not solve problem
Tried the UltraISO save and found the resulting file 32 bytes shorter than original. Comparing the altered .iso with the original showed quite a number of differences.I was wondering if you could try one of the proposed solution (resave using UltraISO with "Omit ISO 9660 version number" ticked) and let us know whether that works.
However, I got the same results as with the original .iso: it would not boot on my Compaq CD, but will boot on either the CD burner or DVD on my other box.
