restore partition, from bigger to smaller

#1 Post by captain wibbly » Mon Jul 21, 2008 4:04 am

hiya,
i got a new vostro 1200, with a
fresh install xp, (onto a 15 gb partition), backed up to dvd and also on another 20 gb partition.. using the partition saver utility (occupied sectors).

question is now how do i get it back to the c: drive (or 0 drive).
main problem being it is smaller than th back up partition size - which seems to not be to the liking of various partition managers on the disk.

my problem is exacerbated by me being extreme linux noob and a vague DOS noob.

but mostly, when running the ubcd 4.1.1 download, i can't get the NTFS option to install/work. it gives (or at least what i can see)

UNPACK: Error whil unpacking "A:\level1\VC.CAB"
and
ERROR: Out of memory while processing cabinet file IDLE.CAB

also out of memory with AUTORUN3.CAB
- i found another post which suggested using a different memory option at the beginning, but I do not get that option.

thankx

good work. you could have also tried using Ranish Partition Manager (included in the UBCD distribution) - simply type "partman" at the command prompt or access it from "menu".

useless now i know, but may prove helpful for those without a licensed copy of ghost.

sorry to hear that, chief. did you try upgrading the freedos disk image?
viewtopic.php?t=1422

try typing "part" or "partman" at the command line prompt to launch (can't remember whether there's an issue when launching from the menu (i'll look into it for rev1.2).

:)
