Local drive (C) is invalid!!??

#1 Post by CleaverX » Wed Jun 15, 2005 1:41 pm

Hi all, Mr n00b here once again seeking advice from the grand masters...
Has anyone else had problem getting the local hard drive to be recognized?. When I use the antivirus tools from UBCD (mostly McAfee and F-Prot) often enough I cannot get them to scan the local HDD.
When I issue the drd command, it returns the drive C as 'invalid'. So the AV tools only scan the ramdrive and the cd rom. Well that's not going to do me any good now, is it?? I am always careful to enable ntfs support on the xp machines, but it does not seem to matter. Could it be a sign of a corrupted boot sector? I usually run drive diagnostics like dft on the same drive without incidents. If dft sees the drive, why is memdisk calling it invalid?
Anyone wants to step up to the plate and take a crack at this one?
Don't be shy, come on down!!!

If you are using an NTFS partition, I am having some problems myself
with NTFSDOS/FreeDOS, which I am trying to sort out with Erwin.

Some things you can try, which may or may not work.

- Try a different FreeDOS boot option (eg. 5) instead of 1. I find that
5 gives me better results than 1.

- Try skipping the NTFS step in FreeDOS, and run "ntfsdos" at the
command prompt instead. It will try you which drives letters are
mounted. If it says "Unrecognized NTFS partition". Try doing it a few
times. Sometimes it doesn't work for me for the first one or two tries.

Basically, NTFS support is still quite trouble-prone. Hopefully we will
be able to sort it out in the next release.

Thank you again Victor, you made my day!!!
That means that my disks works, and that I am not doing anything wrong.
I will try selecting different options as you conseled.
I believe that if you guys can figure this out would be a tremendous thing.
Pretty much all the new computers are coming out of the manufacturers with ntfs partitions, and a lot of people upgrading to XP are reformatting as well. It would be nice to run a true command line virus scan, without all the errors due to locked or inaccessible files.
Fight on!!
