None of the Disk Imaging/Cloning tools work

#1 Post by Sess » Sat Jan 17, 2009 12:57 pm

I just built a new computer using the EVGA X58 motherboard. This mobo does not have a floppy drive connection. The only operation I ever do on my computer outside of Windows a drive cloning. This is usually when I've purchased a new HDD and want to switch my files around and dispose of the oldest drive. All my drives are SATA.

So I downloaded and burned the UBCD. I booted it up and saw the many disk cloning tool. I ran every single one of them one by one and every single one had some sort of error except one which seemed to just freeze (I forget the name but I think it was the only one that had mouse drivers and a GUI).

So what's the problem? Do none of these programs support SATA? Do I really need to figure out how to get my old Ghost boot disk onto a CD?

Wow, two weeks and no response. Am I really the only person having this problem?

If you can give more information about the some sort of error thing, it would be easier to guess what could be wrong.

Try the beta of UBCD50 first.

I had the same problem with my EVGA x58, and I have tried both the v4 and the beta v5.

Most of the disk utilities (I think the OnTrack ones) have some sort of error saying 'please insert disk in drive B,' and they just freeze on that.

I managed to get one utility working, but it only recognized 2 of my 6 hard drives.
I'm assuming the problem is that those old utilities don't recognize the JMicron SATA controllers.

I had planned on doing a disk clone, but I might have to switch it to a different mobo to do that. What a pain..

Try Parted Magic (included in UBCD50). It has cloning tools.

I looked for PartedMagic... I can't find it in any of the subdirectories under HDD. Maybe I'm using an older version of the v5 beta.

I was planning on getting the newest Ontrack from WD (since Ontrack doesn't seem to offer it), but the 11.2 version is apparently what is already on the v5, and it doesn't work.

As for the error, it says exactly:
"Insert diskette for drive B:
and strike any key when ready..."

Striking a key doesn't have any effect, and I obviously do not have a floppy drive anymore.

Parted Magic is on the first menu of UBCD50.
