The difference is that UBCD v5.0 isn't made by Ben Burrows. It is made by Victor Chew and me.

UBCD can be downloaded as iso (you only need to burn it). It contains a lot of different tools (which don't need Windows to run).

UBCD4WIN is a project that will create a bootable CD which contains Windows that you have to build yourself, because you can't legally distribute Windows.

Vedio on using UBCD V5.0

#3 Post by basscarp » Thu Dec 03, 2009 4:13 pm

Is there a video out there showing the purpose and use of UBCD V5.0. I am still confused as to the diffrence between UBCD 4 Windows V3.5 and UBCD V5.0. I have seen Matts Video on using UBCD 4 windows already.

Thanks, Mike

UBCD for windows is a BARTPE based windows live cd, which is based on WinPE by microsoft (which is their preboot environment for doing multiple machine deployment). Basically it's a way to boot windows up on a system and use the windows utilities without having windows installed on the harddrive. Its handy to have if you need something custom for a corporate environment to do work on a local machine but really for diagnostics its crap (once you load a windows environment you lose access to a lot of low-level hardware functions).

UBCD5 is a Dos- and linux -oader based diagnostics utility package consisting of a bunch of freeware. VERY Good for diagnostics as most of the stuff runs in real mode or protected mode with no junk in the background to get in the way.

I use both in the shop; primarily UBCD for windows is handy for chkdsking stuff (you have to chkdsk a inproperly powered down vista box before using a password wipe util to get the disk unset from read-only) and UBCD is good for when you want a heavier diagnostics on a part than PC-check, PC Doc 6 or PC doc 2k4 can provide.
