I'm trying to upgrade my bios and i want to get access to either my c:\ drive or a usb drive.

From the ubcd menu I have selected FreeDOS then clean boot. I get a command prompt a:\ but it seems i can't get to c:\ d:\ or any other drive on my computer.

For access to NTFS filesystems and USB devices, I suggest using Parted Magic. Access under FreeDOS, as far as I can determine, is not very reliable.

But the problem with that is the tools required to flash a bios typically only work in DOS and therefore will not run in Linux.

Interesting, found a webpage that seems to have links to programs that run in dos:http://www.opus.co.tt/dave/utils.htm

Curious if they can be added to UBCD....

Here is an interesting link provided: "Duse v4.9 From Pocketec, are USB DOS drivers for USB hard disks, CDROM drives and other USB storage devices like Zip drives" Curious if that supports USB flash drives as well...tho don't see any documentation regarding flash drives. Wonder if it can be tested. I dont think you can include it IN UBCD for download but since it is free for anyone to download any one should be able to include it in freedos or something. Hey Icecube, do you think it's possible for someone to add it to their own copy of UBCD and how would someone go about doing so?

For BIOS flashing, I suggest making a simple DOS boot disk or DOS app archive, and add it to the custom menu.



Anything you have in mind? Most applicable apps there seems to be included already...



Duse V4.9 is already included on the FreeDOS boot disk (select "Config" under the USB menu, and select "Duse driver").

Like I mentioned previously in another post, I have tried all the options but found the USB drivers to be hit-and-miss. I have also tried two other newer-generation DOS USB drivers (suggested by IceCube), and they have similar problems.

I am sure they'd work on some machines with certain config settings, but I want something that will work on most machines without much fiddling.

That's understandable. Hit or miss is of-course is unreliable.

I was unaware of these drivers being included.
