"Error loading operating system" windows xp can't boot
Hi,
I would really need your help. My laptop for my work just stop working, here is the story:
the battery died and the computer shut down by itself, when i came back i turn it back on with power cord, enter my bios password and then black screen and the only thing i see in the top left corner: Error loading operating system.
So i try to boot on a Win XP cd and do F2 for repair, but when windows starts to start i have a blue screen telling me that the system need to shutdown for safety or something like that.
So ithought that it was a bad sector for booting or something like that, i boot using ultimate boot cd i can go in parted magic but i'm not sure what to do there. Any help would be appreciated.
And i know that i have some restore point on my system, i mean those restore point that you can usually use in windows to restore your system as an ulterior date, is there a way to restore those points without booting in windows???
thanks
I forgot to say that i'm running win XP sp2 or 3 not sure.
matt

Reset your Bios to "Factory Settings" See if that gets you any farther with windows.
Next, try booting UBCD and running memtest+, under memory option, to check your RAM to see if its faulty as this would cause all sorts of issues with windows. If memory is bad try removing it and swapping memory sticks if you have 2 or move the 1 to the other slot of you have 2 slots available.
Also may want to try another wall outlet as incorrect/fluctuating voltages/frequency can cause Hardware issues as well.
Try using the correct Manufacturer HDD tool to see if you can recover the drive. You may have to remove the drive to find out which Manufacturer it is. Then make sure you check and repair with whatever tool you use.

Ok!
thanks for your help really appreciated. I tried a different electric outlet, and i even try with or without dock station.
did the bios restore to factory and same thing.
Could it be something about MBR?
And do you know a way to recover my windows restore point?
My HDD is an hitachi, i don't think i'v seen a tool for this manufact.
And when i'm in linux for the bootable cd, i can acces my files no problem, from partition C: or D: that i usually have in windows.

Under HDD> Diagnostics> ATA Diagnostics Tool V7 and Drive Fitness Test v4.16. Try Fitness first.

Download knoppix live cd, boot from it and run ntfsfix from terminal. Knoppix can mount even badly corrupted drives.

You don't have an overclocked system or anything do you? Have you check that your PSU is producing correct voltage? PSU's are the most common failing parts of a computer. ESP. since people buy cheap ones to save a few bucks.
In windows xp, you cant do a system restore in you cant boot windows. You would have to use the XP install disc to do a windows repair.
Have you tried making sure that the XP CD is not scratched/dirty and if it is clean it with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab? Then try repair installing XP again.
