unable to fully boot into xp

I an not compter literate. Xp will boot to just before the "user" screen then stays dark with mouse cursor visible. It will go to safe mode with "safe mode" in each corner but dark.Ctrl Alt Del does not work I also chose "select xp lst good copy" but booted to dark scre...
