Don't choose the silent mode of the FreeDOS startup screen.
Try option number 2 for example.

Try Parted Magic on UBCD and mount the partitions on the hard disk and copy the files to another partition.

If your partition table is damaged, use Testdisk on Parted Magic.

Parted Magic has a lot of cloning tools:
- Clonezilla
- FSarchivers
- partclone
- partimage

Try the second boot option. I doesn't need that much RAM (and doesn't extract the whole lzma compressed squash file to RAM, which can be slow on old CPUs).

If you have problems with Xorg, try the vesa menu option.
