Update to MemTest86 from Passmark

#1 Post by Trickery » Fri Aug 16, 2013 11:45 am

MemTest86 has been updated to v4.3.1, current UBC has v4.2.0. Not sure if you include betas, but they have a v5.0 beta that completely supports UEFI which is awesome.

memtest86 v.5 (which BTW is freeware, not GPL) and up are mainly for UEFI systems. UBCD should keep using prior versions, currently v4.3.6 (GPL, for BIOS).

The "5.0.0" Free Edition still expands to V4.3.6 as far as I can tell.

They are updated independently. For example, if a new version 4.3.7 gets out, version 5 is not updated, unless a new UEFI-related patch is introduced.

Including version 5 in UBCD might even give the wrong impression that UBCD can work in EFI mode.

For UBCD, there is no value added at this point in time. IMO, UBCD should keep using the BIOS branch of memtest86. If someone wants to try the EFI branch, it is easier to download the most "current" version at that moment and follow their instructions.

hi

i find that....

The V5 download also includes V4 of the software. The MemTest86 V5 image supports dual booting (UEFI & old style BIOS).

On machines that don't support UEFI, the older V4 BIOS release of MemTest86 will be automatically booted.

As already explained, they are two independent branches.

If today a new updated v.5.xx image would get released, it would also include the current latest v.4.xx. But, if a month later, a new v4.xx would get out, then the images for v.5.xx would still include the older release of v.4.xx, not the latest.

Moreover, most tools included in UBCD depend on BIOS. So it makes perfect sense to keep including the latest BIOS-based versions of memtest86.

Including UEFI-dependent software in UBCD could potentially suggest that UBCD is already capable of supporting UEFI, which is currently not the case.

At this point, if a user wants to use the UEFI-based version of memtest86, he should download the updated images from Passmark.

BTW, as long as memtest86 v.4.xx can run in my system, I would rather choose v.4 over v.5, since it is capable of testing just a little bit more RAM than the latter.
