Backing up old hdd

I recently updated my computer and want to get stuff off my old hard drive, but every time i try access it it says that it isn't formatted yet and asks to format it, it gave me a S.M.A.R.T. warning for a while when i was still using it, that's the main reason why i updated, but it still worked, can anyone help me?

What are you using to try to back it up? If the new or old drive is a Seagate or Maxtor drives you should be able to use MaxBlast 5 or DiskWizard to run Acronis True Image 10..

Give a bit more detail about your setup and what you have tried so far and you'll get more accurate suggestions.

Well i was just trying to open it through my new hard drive, then copy what i want then paste it back, it's a Samsung SP0802N.

Any way i can back it all up will be helpful, thankyou.

First off make sure the drive is connected and the jumpers set correctly (Master / Slave). If the new drive loaded with your OS and running fine, is it the same OS as the previous drive?

If everything is loaded and running well on the new drive and you still can't access the old drive some testing needs to be done.

Start with chkdsk d: /f if your problem drive is d: - change if different. It's easier to boot to recovery console when doing this.

If that will not run you can try testdisk or the included Samsung utilities included with UBCD...

My new drive is running perfectly, it's the same OS, installed from the same CD.

This is what i just did...

Did you run the chkdsk on the old drive as well? What were the results?

Were you able to boot to the old drive prior to adding the new drive?

If so, you could try booting to the old drive and copying the files to the new drive. Just set to boot to the old drive in BIOS and see if it boots. If the old drive will not boot and chkdsk doesn't help you can try running testdisk on it to see if it can find the partition info. Just read the testdisk how to prior to using so you know what your doing..
