Stress test on HP Hard Disk

What kind of stress test can i do on HP disk that is on UBCd?
Frankly I don't think it's such a great idea doing stress test on a hard disk, since it has mechanical parts.
If you want to check for bad sectors, you can use one of the manufacturer's util, depending on whether your HDD is made by IBM, Seagate, Maxtor etc.
