Confused newbie needs assistance

Hi -
My enthusiasm mounted when I saw this product out there.
I've downloaded the iso, and followed the instructions on one of the UBCD pages about adding some extra tools. Lots of extra tools were downloaded and lots were updated.
I then burnt a copy of the produced iso and rebooted.
However, none of the extra programs was available and no programs had been updated. Furthermore, when I ran a virus scanner C: was not visible so nothing was done.
Have I missed something obvious here???
Any help would be appreciated,
