ubcd v3.5 (or higher) and replacing INSERT

I am glad to hear of the development of ubcd and hope to see the release of 3.5 soon. It's a great cd and I always keep it in my backpack or with me to friends houses when their computers go down the toilet.

I'd like to make a humble suggestion though, if I may. I suggest that insert be replaced if it's no longer maintained?

I could suggest dsl (damn small) or slax but there are soo many other great ones that perhaps if you are in agreement people can use a poll or vote which one would replace insert. I realize this is probably too soon to ask for changes to be implimented for v3.5 but perhaps you can replace it in v3.6!

Thanks for your time,
Geoff

After UBCD V3.5, I was thinking of removing INSERT from UBCD, and instead provide instructions for integrating various Linux liveCDs with UBCD.

The reason is judging from the response so far, it seems that people are more interested in finding out how to integrate UBCD with their fav liveCD, instead of using the one bundled.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for the great work on the UBCD!!!

INSERT v1.3.8 has a changelog dated 2006-10-20

So that might work for v3.5. Also, I think some people would like to put their own distro. IF it makes things easier here, then let people put their own.

The version of INSERT included in UBCD Full was modified by Charles Appel to be as small as possible so that UBCD + INSERT can fit into a 8cm CDR. It is _not_ compatible with the mainstream INSERT distro, since some major modifications were made.

Charles has since moved on to other things, which is why I am considering going back to UBCD Basic only and leaving the Linux distro integration as a customization exerecise. I have the impression, after all this time, that everyone has his/her favorite Linux distro. :D

well. I agree that it would prob be easier to not include any linux distro in future releases. Especially since the linux geeks preference on live cds depends on his/her use of tools, interface, size, etc...

I would be willing to do a small write up on howto include newest slax and geexbox if it will help at all + when I get new frenzy working again I can include that.

Maintaining INSERT for UBCD in it's actual form it's for sure a burden, unless it's done by somebody that has it's own interest into it.
As for including the original INSERT: looking at how succesful the current UBCD+INSERT is, might provide an answer (ie. number of downloads FULL vs BASIC)

Victor, i'd say your impression is right.

just found this one on distrowatch: http://www.sysresccd.org/
might be worth a tutorial :)
edit: err... you allready did this, sorry...

i'm a personal fan of Slax because its so easy to integrate and boots out of an iso with some small modification but it doesent have much diagnostic tools...
