3.4 Invalid Opcode

#1 Post by kethd » Sun Apr 02, 2006 5:14 am

Something has gone wrong from 3.3 to 3.4, a little step backward. UBCD 3.3 seems more compatible with more computers than UBCD 3.4!

On certain computers, only some 3.4 programs will start properly, but the same programs will start OK with 3.3.

AIDA16 fails to start with:
Invalid Opcode at 0688 4F01 0A96 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000

ASTRA fails to start with:
Invalid Opcode at 3D0A 2486 0202 0517 0000

Memtest starts OK.

The problem is repeatable, every time, with different CDs. The CDs do run these programs OK on other computers. I do not understand all the options for starting programs under UBCD -- these results are based on the defaults. I did not test other programs, so I don't know how many programs have this problem starting.

The computer is:
MSI KM2M Combo (MS-6738) - KM266 chipset
AMD Duron XP 1300MHz Morgan A1
VIA VT8375 ProSavageDDR KM266
01/09/2003 Phoenix-Award BIOS v6.00PG

Let me know how I can track down this regression, so that future versions of UBCD can be even better!

Would you please verify if it's the newer version of fdubcd.img that is giving you the problem? Simply create a customized version of V3.4 by copying over the older version of fdubcd.img from V3.3 and see if it works better for you.

Let me know the result if you do carry out the test.

Thanks!

Thanks for the prompt reply... I've never built a customized LiveCD like this -- could you point me to some material that discusses that details of how I would do such a customization, or a pre-built ISO that has been so modified?

Is there a Windows ISO tool that would let me just pull the file from the 3.3 CD and put it directly into the 3.4 ISO file, and then burn a working 3.4 CD from that modified ISO?
