Ultimate boot / mup.sys

I'm hoping someone can help with suggestions or provide an alternate solution.
This is my work PC. Friday afternoon before leaving for work..everything was working/running fine. Next thing, at home, I can't VPN/remote desktop to machine. Come Monday morning...machine won't boot...safe mode...stops at mup.sys....sounds familiar.
I'm desperately trying to get this machine back up and running. The boys in the help desk say want to take the quick path and blow away the drive. I have too many important projects on here and some wiki pages I definitely need.
I can not get into the recovery console from an XP cd because it's not taking the admin password. I trying resetting it with tools and stuff...still doesn't work. So I can't get in to disable it. Although I read...that wouldn't work.
I just want to know is there anything else I can try before totally giving up. This has been dogging me for about a week. I'm at the end of my rope.
thanks guys
(oh, I have not added any new hardware / software) just left one day and the next....all hell broke loose...thanks
